I just picked up @landonridge's FJZ80 with a blown headgasket and have jumped right into the R&R - and am amazed at how convoluted it is to pull this thing.

That said, I'm trying to search/research at night during my vacation next week (limited internet), but I'd appreciate any "while you're in there" wisdom from you guys in the interim - I'd love to not have to repeat this labor for not knowing ahead of time any tangential/opportunistic items that should be considered/addressed while I have access to them.

I'm looking at EGR deletion, for instance.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Pesky Heater Hose?

I like how you are trying to research how to fix your 80 at night while you are on vacation... I think that shows the typical 80 series insanity of I8Mud character!

Regarding EGR deletion:

Regarding EGR deletion:

ordered this morning, thanks!

Fuel filter, Clean out the oil cooler, replace any broken electrical connectors, have fuel injectors cleaned, Oil pump cover seal if it is leaking.. Mine surprisingly was not, Water pump, Have radiator flushed, install mechanical temp gauge, clean everything , delete egr and pair valve and their vsv's, re-wrap any old wire looms that are coming un-done. This is what I did to mine when I did it a few years back. I am sure there more that I am forgetting. This was the first HG I had done and it was not as bad as thought it was. Plus you learn a lot about these rigs when you do it.. I also have a link to the Idaho Doug HG replacement video. If you want it you have to pay him first then I can send ya the link..(PM me for more info) Good Luck

Oh I have connectors to replace....!

I can pull an engine in about 4 hours with power tools and a lift but I have done it a few times and rust doesn't exist here.

well, the oil pan leaks...

I would start by doing the crank seal and oil pump gasket. As they leak, the oil can track along the top edge of the pan making it look like the pans leaks. They are much easier than resealing the pan. We have done many of these as they are really quite common.

I can get a body off in 2 hours
