So I got a call from Alan Podvin tonight to review his 100 series he has for sale.

I was absolutely on target to offer him the dough and run with it.

I had to run it by the boss ("She who must be obeyed" as I like to call her).

She challenged me, but in a new way that I wasn't expecting.

My wife challenged me to make my 91 FJ80 what I always wanted it to be instead of looking for the next best thing....then she authorized my spending 7-8K to do it.

Interesting!

I have let Alan know I am not interested in the 100 (I really am, it is awesome, but this challenge is more interesting to me right now).

So....

Christo, be prepared to fab up some of those fancy arms to make the sliders work on my 91, a rear bumper and a t-case skid should go nicely in that order. Will be calling within the next month or two when I can schedule the vacation to install it all.

CDan, you get so much of my money I don't even have to warn you. I should be able to fund your ion drive upgrade with my plans ;)

Everyone else, you have to put up with the "3FE Powa!" motto for a while longer. Maybe I should make T-shirts?

It all came down to the respect I have for the old beast. My wife drove it tonight and said that my repairs have made it like a new truck. She is excited to see what I can do to it with the mods.

"The List"
- Slee Rear
- Slee Sliders
- Slee T-Case
- 34x12.50x16 Truxus (I have 16s on it now)
- 4.88s
- ARB front, Aussie Rear
- Warn 9.5xp
- Bedliner for roof, hood, and lower 2 tone

Ahhh, feels good to have a plan.

That's cool Dan. Then again, that was one sweet 100 and you could do 55 mph without getting in to a tuck position going down hill with the wind at your back :flipoff2:

You have a solid rig and it should be awesome when done. I would not rush out at first like that though. Just my view, but I'd take my time. I say that as someone who dumped a butt-load into his rig and ended up doing a lot of stuff 2 and 3 times and still regret doing some of it.

Well, that is all the "base build" for me.

I know I want all of that from the past three trucks I have built.

I have the lift, I have the front (as you know ;)) and I have all the interior goodies sorted out minus GPS...hmm, add that to the list.

I guess I could go nuts and put a 6" slee job under there with the whole soup to nuts setup too with 35s and 5.29s to spin the big bastards...hehe.

Kinda why I posted this. Gotta have it on paper before you go nuts!

maybe this should be a "what should I do for 8K" post?

he asked 26k for it in his ad

and very serious from what i read

so how much was alan asking for the modded 100? How serious was he about selling it?

[/quote]26k ,it's in the for sale forum right now

Congrats Dan, I dream of the day I convince my wife of the same, I have been working at it for months but have gotten no where :'(

FYI, the 100 is worth every penny.

I talked with Alan for a long time on the phone and the price is "as it sits" plus new tires of your choice.

He tore up the grabbers that are on it (38s) so he is putting on any size or brand tire the buyer would like...all for that price.

It includes the compressor, axe, shovel, fire extinguisher, stereo, etc.

Literally ready to wheel.

Anyone that can swing the 26K is getting a great deal.

Alan is even signing his trucks now that he has a cult following (which I am one of them). I think that is a super idea given how much he is working on now.

The next projects he mentioned are even more impressive.

$7 to 8k will buy you a SBC and some goodies. Sell the 3FE and make some of that back.

Great to see you get to build the 80 up to suit. I LOVE my Slee rear bumper, it is one of my favorite mods.

As far as Alan's 100 is concerned, it must be viewed in person to truly appreciate what he built. The asking price sounds very fair to me.

No affiliation, yadda, yadda, yadda.... Just a damn nice job.

I could, but I don't need it.

Regear and mods are my route of choice. I actually like my 3FE quite a bit!

It's funny, but I like the old style engines as well. The 1FZ is just too competent. It does it all well and without fuss. I know it isn't rational, but I like my 60 best of all. It's slow, noisy etc but it gets the job done and done and done. On the trail, the 2F in the 40 feels just right, with torque at the right place without fuss. It will lug down to 200 rpm where you feel each cylinder fire and still keep going. I would think that the 3FE (basically a fuel injected 2F) would be awesome in a 40 or a 60. That may have to be a future project. Either that, or a low mileage 91-92 80 series modded to an H55f manual tranny/split case. The place where the 1FZ excells with no rivals, is a fast cruise to a destination, then hard wheeling, and a fast cruise home. I'll take the 80 anyday for that. This is deteriorating into chat, sorry.

I hear you on the 1FZ front, but I like my 91 just as is.

- My 3FE gets up to 80 and holds it on the highway without complaint.
- I get just over 220 miles per tank since my birf job.
- I like it simple for the trail repair aspect of things.

I guess it helps that I have thrown in an incredible amount of new parts in the past year and a half.

Thanks bjowett. No, but was thinking of trying to convince him that he needs to go canvas :D

I have big ol' roll of Sunbrella just waiting for the cutting tools to get started. If anyone else plans on chopping, LMK, maybe we could share idea's on it?

Dan, when you call Slee ask Robbie about what he's done/can do to the 3FE... boring out the cylinders, shaving down the head, complete rebuild... yeah it probably takes a couple weeks and a couple grand, but in the end you'll be blowing 1FZ's away off the line, going 75mph up hills, yet still have all that great ease of maintenance & reliability of the 3FE that you've grown to love. Steve Crase had this done on his FJ62, if you know him.. after I sold my 62 I got off the 3FE list so I'm not sure if you (or he) is on there any more...

But anyway, if I had a 3FE, the cash, and the time, I'd be signing it up for the Robbie treatment in a second.. but I do only live 30 minutes away... just something to consider, I envy your position and look forward to the results. hth -tim

Yep, Steve is still on the 3fe list, he is VERY happy with his built 3fe.
