As you've probably guessed by some of my other posts of mine my fj40 project is not going to be a painstakingly, no stone left unturned, high zoot resto. So with that in mind I'm looking for a plain Jane, solid , 15 x 5.5 , 4'' center hole, 3.5'' backset wheel to mount my spare on. Another key word here would be cheap. I could probably live with some pattern cut outs except the wagon wheel style. My local mega acre junkyard turned up nothing. It seems to me I might have seen a thread here on trailer wheels that fit the description but now I can't find it.

How much are you willing to spend? Stock 40 steel wheels are ~ $100 each at the dealer.

I'm hoping to get out of it in the $50.00 or less range as there's so many other places that $100.00 needs to go right now but thanks for the heads up on the dealer price as that can be my fallback otherwise!

just for rollers right now?
craigslist, facebook, etc. mid/late 1970's Chevy/GM rims will fit
$100-200 for a set of 4 around here

Every 6 lug Chevy rim I came across in the junkyard the other day had the right lug pattern but only a 3.5'' dia. center hole and the backset on them was on average 6" deep which I wasn't sure would work for my application.

Good news / bad news, you'll find very few Toyota trucks in the junkyard, a testament to how long their trucks last, bad news is the few that are there the wheels are already gone. :(

Why not post a wanted ad in the classifieds here and look for a stock used wheel?
I might if it isn't too far away. The cost of shipping anything the least bit heavy has gone out of sight, so if I can drive an hour or two to get it yes, otherwise no.

This thread could help

I might be able to help you? I have 4 wheels from a 60 just sitting around. I’ll know later!

Maybe this?

You might look on etrailer too.

So many different builds that I follow them. Cheap option might be a early wheel with rivets. Unless your going disc in the back it will work on later 1970s axles. Believe I had a issue they did a late 1970s FF both should fit thru 7/80 semi floating axle. If you have flat in the front just put the spare on the back and that back wheel where the flat is. Not idea but a cheap option. There are a lot of old riveted wheel around that were pulled for a disc axle conversion.

PS if your looking for solid 60 series wheels are spokes.

Chev wheels from the '50s-mid '80s had a much better offset and they look way more 'FJ 40'... As far as the center holes, I have cut them bigger with many different methods. Hole saw with a pilot, turning them like a lathe on a rear axle, even a recip 'jig' saw. These wheels are lug centered, not hub-centric so other than aesthetics the hole needn't be perfect. I drove 15 years on a home-cut set including a trip from Seattle to Boston and back towing a cargo trailer, never an issue.

I have an original Toyota rim 15x5.5 you can have for the cost of shipping and tire removal. Currently has a “vintage” old tire on it. Might be a few days before I can dig it out of storage. I’ll take a pic and you can have a look at it.

Was on my 40 series.

There is also MUDship, if you’re in striking distance of the interstate. There’s probably a couple of folks headed to TX from CA in a few weeks for the Lone Star Roundup that could help.

I don’t know if any of them will be passing through Burbank, but I have an old 1960s Chevy truck rim that I pulled off of a 40, so I can vouch that it fits. And it’s free.

Thank you both for the offers and the help. Today I went over to visit a friend for coffee who restores 1950's Chevy truck NAPCO conversion 4x4's and got on the subject of rims. We went and looked in his pile of old axles and wheels and lucky for me we found a 15'' rim of the right width and a center hole of 4''s, no cutting needed. He gave it to me, I brought it home and pulled a wheel on the 40 and it bolted right up. So after some searching it turns out my buddy had what I needed all along. He's got so much stuff he can't keep track of it all.

In case you haven't seen the axiom before: this thread is worthless without pics!😛

I'm betting you got a wheel JUST like the one I was offering.😉

Pictures of sorts,..... My friend has a huge polebarn full of NAPCO's he has collected over the years. For those of you who are not familiar in the 1950's Chevy and GMC did not make their four wheel drive trucks in house, you placed your order at the dealer the truck got shipped to the NAPCO plant where it was converted and then shipped off to the dealer for sale to the customer. They never sold in great numbers and the survivors are quite collectable.
