Not hatin' a bit, just statin' the facts. Didn't say they were bad, didn't say people were bad for having them. My opinion is that they don't alleviate a significant amount of dust, and if you're in water over your hood you're in the kind of trouble a snorkle isn't gonna help with. I might buy that with a supercharger you are so close to the edge of disaster that a few degrees would be significant. And you like the look, which is a perfectly valid reason to have one, or certain wheels, or a particular color, stripe, bull bar, etc.

not entirely true actually, you CAN be in water over your hood and as long as you continue moving forward and have a bow wave, the engine will not get flooded, stopping though is a no no.......
This is true, with or without a snorkel. My point was it's not usually water in the intake that causes the problems. Many more things can go wrong at that point. BTDT, with success and without. Lack of a snorkel has never been an issue.

I'm cool with that louvre plate - but I'm from WA where we have 'recreational weed', so grain of salt. And I'm an all-grain homebrewer. So I'm all for 'live, let live' -stuff.
Not **exactly** my personal preference, but I bet you heard plenty between pages 2-5 of thread. Mebbe keep a stock hood in the garage rafters for winter or if time changes your taste.
Full honesty, when (not if) I finally install my S/C with the fluid cooler, I have a hood scoop ala' Trans Am looking thing (think chickenhawk hood), just offset & from an obscure EU production rig that if you flip backwards works perfect with a Bell intercooler & looks right.
So good on ya, we need to see what others think a good idea & maybe it's something we can graft into our own junk in some form or other.

The 6 years I spent living in the Middle East I sure saw a Million frickin dudes that liked the “look” then...... about every SUV in the sandbox had a snorkel, and there sure as hell wasnt no water around.

@ElJayBird , you dirty, dirty bird. I see you sold the shifter handle that was supposed to come with the truck too.
I ain't that mad. I'm painting the truck, putting locking axles under it, and a 1HD-FTE + H151 in it. Maybe I'll post pics here when it's done.

@gonzopancho Man - sorry to hear about the trouble with the head gasket. Most of the cooling system was replaced following the HG job - I had no expectation of a possible failure at the time of sale. The guys at Land Cruiser Specialists gave it a thumbs-up during the inspection, as you know. I don't think anyone could have seen that coming.
Regarding the shifter handle - I absolutely owe you a shifter handle. I misplaced your contact info during my move to Portland but I'll gladly order one for you or Venmo some cash your way. Just let me know your preference.
Also - I found the winch controller that should have been in the truck when I left it with you. PM me your address and I'll send it your way.
Really sorry for the trouble - I sold the truck to you in the middle of moving out of state and things were a little chaotic.

Not all Land Rovers are useless!
Just got a notification about this old thread and re read it. 1st I would say louvers definitely help with under bonnet temperatures, and I like the look, I thought that when I went all electric with the cooling fan that if it did not work then it was an addition that may help, but as it goes the system runs cool since fitting the electric fan, circa 6...ish years ago? Controls engine temperatures climbing steep mountain grades in 40+ degrees C heat.
What I would contest is the comments about snorkels and how they do not help with dust. I have tried cars with and without snorkels and they definitely keep the air filter cleaner. A friend whose Discovery had a snorkel but had to have it removed because it did not have the fitting paperwork and was deemed dangerous.....yeh this is Spain so I removed it and the hole in the wing was welded up and painted. He like me has to access his property through a dusty track every day, he went from one air filter change per year to one every six months.
And consider this, where the snorkel is drawing air it is a damn sight cleaner than that being thrown around in the wheel arch, double skinned or not.
As an aside, I have had to get across a flooded rambla (river or mountain water run off), with no snorkel, the water was over the bonnet but I knew there was a concrete base and loss of traction would not be an issue, the main intake of water into the car came in from the rubber gaiter around the lower steering column, mine was worn and let water in through there, the water that went into the air intake for the heater is directed away so does not come in the interior.
This is not something I would normally do, but there is a charity dog shelter that was cut off and they needed checking out. I would NOT have done this in a petrol 80, unless it had an electric cooling fan that could be shut off/disabled. Even when moving slowly the mechanical fan tries to throw water around the engine bay, less of course if the radiator is already cool so the viscous action is not so strong.

Anyone looking for this Poyson Spyderco hood louver panel # 14-53-011-PC.
It’s been DISCONTINUED by the manufacturer.
I’ve called 15 places today looking for it.
Summit Racing was the ONLY place that had any in stock, & only at their TX warehouse.
I asked the guy how many were left & he said just a few.
I ordered today, 193.93 out the door with shipping.

I must say that the main cooling system for these cars is the Radiator ,pump and fluid running in the motor block.
This system MUST be kept in perfect efficiency in order to avoid having any sort of heating and worst meld down .
any vent on the hood , that many people like to make is simply dropping the efficiency of this system.
Pls let me explain ,
when the car is running , all the air is forced to pass from the radiator in the motor van.
with a close hood we will generate a depression under the hood , so that the air will flow through the radiator , and go towards the bottom of the motor and then under the car .
altering this aerodynamic pressure /depression , we take away a big flow through the radiator , in practice diminishing the efficiency of it .
we might add some air flow from the top , but the cooling effect is only superficial , and not specific with the motor block , which is where we have the real heat .
I have personally have driven for may weeks in north africa sands , in August , never ever had any problem of overheating .
with no hood vents .
just my 2 cents .
