I pulled my PTO cover and stuck a camera in there.

You tell me

Steve, aka Poser, and I have it figured out.....

I did not put a spacer behind the gear on the output of the tranny. If you compare the before and after pics, you can see the gear walked back (towards the tranny) and probably machined the inside of the t-case.

Be glad that you caught this now....before that bolt backed out any further...

**********THIS IS NOT AN ORION****************

Why there now is a Toybox and an Orion behind the 465 in the Orange truck...

The spacer is needed to prevent the gear from moving on the mainshaft of the tranny, and to keep it aligned with the seal, and counter-gearset.....at least it has been needed on the 420 and 465 plate adapters that I have installed....perhaps others have different expierences..

Hopefully you do not find any other surprises Mike! I really wish you lived closer man...

Good luck!

.

No lock tab on the bolt retaining the gear either. Like to live dangerously?

I never thought to put an inspection cover there. Nice thinking!

cute rice.....

The way I'm seeing it, the bolt is tight on the tranny output shaft, and didn't back off.

I'm guessing that the inside rib/case structure on the Orion is thicker in this area than a stock case, and the input gear - does the gear move in-out slightly with the retaining bolt tight?

I wonder if there isn't some spacer/shim thats supposed to be on the backside of the tranny output that is allowing for slightly more space than normal....hhhhmmmm

good pics tho....keep the info coming!

Steve, do you have a part number or thickenss for this spacer?

I have the same leak that Treeroot has (I don't have the orion, though). and I will be pulling the t-case this weekend to investigate.

I remember putting a VERY thin washer on the the tranny output shaft for this purpose. But IIRC, the gear didn't mesh right.

Thanks.

You can with the 420s but take a look at the pic. How could I add the retainign pin if the gear is flush?

I ran my 465/plate for 4-5 years with nothing more than locktite and a splitlock to keep the bolt tight...it was a bitch to remove....

of course, that assumes I had locktite handy, which I know for a fact I did not when I switched from a 69 t-case to a 72 t-case.......

The bolt to the tranny is tight but the gear is moving on the output shaft. Steve said he adds a spacer between the tranny and the gear on all his installs. Mine does not have the spacer but it will when I rebuild it.

How thick is your adapter Mike?

3/4"...... 1"..... ?????

I remembered years ago that Bill Jackson aka Cardinal Fang on the LCML list noted people not to forget the thin spacer between the tranny and xfercase input gear otherwise the input gear will eat into the transfercase. And when I did my xfercase swapped I made sure the stock spacer was installed and this was with the H41 tranny....People, don't forget the spacer...

/td

plates are 3/4" thick

I ran the identical plate on mine and the input gear had no movement....unless that "spacer" was on the tranny output and I never noticed it....

didn't have the movement with the ClassicCruisers plate I had installed previously either....

Steve, is this spacer a stock GM piece? Maybe on some trannies and not on others? or ?!?

Take a little bit off the end of the spline on the gear with a carbide end mill in a die grinder to make room for the pin. Safety wire would work too. I have seen too many bolts back out, even with red Locktite.

fawk , fawk , fawkin spacer , what who and where the hell. Not in my 420 adapter instructions , please advise as to the thickness of this , I found 1 that is about 1/8 inch and was in the box from the tranny rebuild and I am suspicious that this is it ???????
