If there aren't any chunks, and it's operating normally, I wouldn't get all wadded up over it. Shine in the oil is common with new break ins.

True. I'm sure it probably is break in. But when I destroyed my t case gears there were no chunks but it looked much of the same.

I cleaned it with soapy water/carb cleaner/compressed air. I didn't get in there with a wire brush or anything but it was clean. I am going to wait until someone else drains their lube before I tear the truck apart.

O.K. I'll drain it in about 3 hrs. and post up for ya. Hope it ain't terminal cause I sure you were more meticulous in the build than we were . Please be a normal breakin condition ?

a little off subject, but which diff gears are you guys using that sook like that? I have had a few sets of "Yukon"s and they never showed any flakes. ( I also run syn if that matters)

These are T-case gears, not R&P... Yukons flake just like every other R&P from my experience... Never enough to cause any harm :D

fawk , you guys are funny , Butch is just sore cause I said somethin bout the texicans and tree is just waitin to see if I'mm in the same boat. It,s cold here tonight or I'd be out there checkin it now , I think it is like 51 deg. tonight. :D Now go shovel your driveways and Butch , I don,t do that under the cruiser anymore . Your club is the one with the pink stickers. On a serious note , I gots earl comin out the speedo cable retaining nut at the t-case , new o ring , wtf ? idler shaft leaks a little too.

d'ya pinch the orings when you put it together?

No leaks on the spedo or the idler. Looks like the rear plate is holding up as well. I decided to refill it and run it. The amount of metal in there is minimal if you look at the total quantity. I had the neodymium magnet in the lube the past couple of days and it pulled some metal out but not enough to indicate a failure. We are all used to draining our stock cases with over 200,000 on 'em. I'll put a couple hundred on this change and post again what I find.

Pees is MIA. I am going up behind Gross Reservoir. I drove all around town and nothing seems out of order. The slight gear whine has dissapeared with the semi-synthetic in there. I was thinking the MTF was a bit thin. Who knows. I'm out...

I don't mind talking to myself. Others might think that is odd but I don't mind.

Just got back from a nice drive up behind the reservoir. Nutley rode shotgun and other than finding out my Orion does have the problem with shifting into neutral by itself, not much happened. Went through about 3/4 of a tank (big tires...no clue on actual mileage). No leaks, no noises, and no excessive heat in any of the parts.

I was just lettin you rant to see if you would bring it , you did ,that was funny. Yeah just run it , duh, My fluid had little stuff but no bfd. I got leaks confirmed and verified at the idler , speedo , A/A mount , fawk , everywhere I looked except the e-brake and rear out put and front output so you know what , that's right folks fawk it. I think the A/A mount interferes with the new cases at the rib in the casting thats at 5 o'clock position. I will clearance it soon. I also discovered that when bolting t-case in we did not notice passenger side motor mount was just hanging in mid air about 1 in. above the rubber pad.( A/A style mount ) . Lower pad failed and allowed bolt to move up . WTF , can't anybody do s*** right , even me. it never ends. I now realized why PO had a 3/4 in. stack of washers under the driver side rear A/A mount ( kinda like puttin a book under 1 corner of table)... I quickly replaced failed rubber , put a 1/2 of nice pimpin washers under each mount and tighten er up. Maybe the starter won't go zzzzzziiiiinnnnnggggg every time it starts , damn thing sounds like a blower or something then it starts and people are like so what was the big noise , .. I am not mia . I just got done puttin my disc's on the front and let me tell you , the boy's at JT's r&d department prolly are glad they were not in Cali. this weekend. I fixed motor and t-case mounts , installed brakes , drilled , ez outed and re tapped all my f-ed up hub bolts( 6 ) , drilled and replaced all 4 shear pins which were previously not there or busted. Put soft top on . Installed new hardware on rear trac bar to prevent constant loosening of some bolts .
Cool thing is I don't have to use the 1/4 in. spacers with the new discs , they clear the tie rod end.
Bad parts , Jt's kit has you grind down hubs around peremiter to fit inside new rotor ( one fit and one I ground ( easy )) Had to remove steering stops , calipers don,t contact brackets , meaning all the stock disc brakes I've seen the calipers ride right between the fingers of braket and are close so when you stop on it the caliper is up against bracket not just held by bolts. The bolts they supply are way to long and not drilled. I reused stock and wired em. Installed windshield hold downs and pads on hood, did not get my heater in tho , dam it . What did you get done , oh yeah , beware people here come the picks of this weekends compost wars , and the stump climb , and can you for the love of God take those flapper shackles the heck off the 40 and give em to some mini truck guy. I get my birf's back from the doctor soon.

ORION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

We added the following statement to the Orion instruction sheet:
"It is recommended that the Orion oil be changed and the magnetic drain plug cleaned after the first 500 miles. The initial break in will produce some metallic debris from the new cast iron case, this debris will adhere to the drain plug and look like thick grease."

I feel much better now
