I couldn't wait to join the club and after searching desperately every day for the past 3 months and longing for one for the past 7 years... plans to drive to boston, cleveland, and new mexico, i found one right in my backyard of Mt. Vernon, IN. it's a '79, sky blue with a holly carb and header, custom exhaust (was rerouted from the drivers side door to the rear), 4" suspension lift with 36" super swamper radials. the inside is immaculate. absolutel no rust. the floors look perfect, the gauges work (except the odometer), the seats need replacing, but that's it for the interior. the exterior was painted 3 years ago and looks great, there's diamond plating that wraps around on the back of the truck... he says that there wasn't any rust there, he just added it for protection as well as asthetic reasons, since he lives on a gravel road.
the engine runs great, nothing sticks, belts were new, wiring was new, new plugs, new clutch, there weren't any leaks. he said he hasn't had a chance to take it out in 3 months and showed me the mat it sat on in the garage... i would've eaten off of it
the guy belonged to a cruiser club here and was a weekend warrior, but he never took it offroad. he'd drive to the trails, park it and ride with the other guys. he says that they made fun of him for never taking it out, and never taking the top off and stuff, but he said he like it for show.... he "liked to drive it and pull up next to a jeep and watch the expression on their face."
the fenders are chipped and cracked in 1 or 2 places and i can see where it's been bondo'd on one... but that's an easy and fairly inexpensive fix.
the only spot that worries me is on the left rear corner panel just above the tire it's starting to bubble a little bit... no flakes and it's a small area. kind of worries me, but after seeing some of the miricales you guys work on here, i'm not as freaked out as i would've been a couple of months ago.
other than that, the truck is pretty much stock. i also received the original wheels and hubs as well as the original springs if i ever want to go back to a stock cruiser.
oh, i got it all for $6950.
did i do alright? should i feel confident in my purchase?
