Borrowed a friend's engine puller today and yanked the drivetrain out of the 68 FJ40. Since everything had a generous coating of oil, all the bolts came free without any issues. I'll be saving the drivetrain for now and prepping the new drivetrain this coming week.

Also pulled out my Summer daily driver 1971 fj-40 and took the kids for a spin around the block. I've got a couple of thing to do to it before I go for any lengthy drives. I did, however, manage to install the new coil/ igniter and it runs!

Yeah, this Winter has hung on like no other. I'm glad to get the ol' 71 fj40 out too! I had to install a new coil and once it was running, I got it buried in th back yard! Lol

Looks good Travis. Would be nice to find myself a reliable 2F and step away from the 1F. Winter just does not seem to want to leave this year. We will probably only have 4 months of no snow :crybaby:. Should be enough snow free time though for me to swap my stuff out and for all of us to get a topless pic. :ban:

Those 2F's are around, mostly in ratted out FJ60's though. ;)

I'm putting a bikini on mine so the :princess: doesn't get as bent out of shape when I oogle it's fine curves.:p.....or lack thereof.

back from the dead! The 2F, 4-Speed, and 4-speed transfercase are bolted in! I'll wire and plumb it all in and see if it runs!

Don't take any dirt or ancient grease off of it might start leaking.....I should have bought it from you when I had the chance :D Looking good TK

I had to brush on that extra dirt and grease for the authentic '68 FJ-40 look. fake patina is en vogue right? ;)

On a tech note, the parking brake drum is pretty close to the rear crossmember and I might end up performing a cut and turn on the crossmember for clearance after I get it running.

Mmkay, Got some more done on the Cruiser between work and fishing.
The motor is bolted in and running-ish, I still have some tuning to do. The oil pan had a hole in it, so I had to source a new one (Thanks Bill). None of the lights worked initially, so I've been working on those. I now have everything working electrically except the wipers. Even the dome light and reverse light work which is a first for any of my 40s. The led taillighs are VERY bright, which is going to be nice.
Now I have to block off the PTO and run the new linkage to everything. After that I've got to figure out what to do with the drivelines and exhaust system.(studs are sheared on the manifold).

Here's some pics of the lights working!

Lookin' good. Love the faux patina.

Thanks! I was kidding about the patina, it's about as real as it gets. I'm having to resist the urge to buff out the paint, but I keep telling myself that I've got to get it running and driving before starting on cosmetics.

Nice progress. I wish I would follow your example and work on the essentials before aesthetics but I keep cutting out rust and such instead of getting my brake and head lights to work and do a carb rebuild.

Yours is coming along great, keep it up.

Another mini update:
I adjusted the valves which were WAY off of the .008 and .014 specs. A couple of them were at .05 and most were around .03!
Retrofitted the original dissy with a PertronixII (Thanks Chris!) and plumbed it up to the vacuum.
I also had to pick up a new to me manifold (Thanks Bill!) Due to an intake crack and several sheared bolts. I installed it last night with a Felpro gasket. Should be leak free!
Had the drive shafts lengthened and shortened, had new u-joints installed, and balanced for a grand total of $600! Seems very steep, but we only have one company in town that works on driveshafts. sigh I even had to paint them myself! Lazy Buggers.
I'll post pics soon. Most of it is pretty boring pic-wise so I'm holding off until it runs again.
Thanks for the support guys!

Youngs is definitely a rip off...I have a buddy that builds shafts on the side next time you need something done.

Thanks, I'll remember that. Youngs has got me for $2500 so far this year. I had them put a new ring and pinion in my plow truck's Dana 60 and now this. I have to grit my teeth ever time I talk to them. Ridiculous over pricing. I don't mind paying people for good work, but it's way out of hand over there.

He's also a yukon gear vendor

Been a reasonably productive couple of days. The ol girl runs, drives, and kinda stops! I took it through all the gears and it did well. I am going to have to figure out the electric fan and what to do about the poor brakes.
Welded up the DS front fender and kinda straightened it out, welded the down pipe on the exhaust, cut and welded the new shifter holes on the tranny hump, got the front doors latching again, and machine buffed out the paint. I couldn't help myself on the paint, it was really starting to bug me. ;) Here's some pics!

Looking good Travis!

Thanks! It's slowly getting there! next on the list is welding in new metal on the PS floor, get the exhaust done from the muffler on back, get the temp gauge working, and hooking up the electric fan that the PO had hack-fabbed. We'll see how it goes.
