I couldn't pass it up- i.e. another project (1 Viewer)

Got some stuff done! I focused on the easy stuff tonight and pulled the old taillights and fugly hitch off, then installed a new spare hubcap, led taillights, bumperetts, and 2" receiver.
I know some purists are going to hate the leds and 2" receiver, but this thing is going to be my daily driver and I've got to be seen in -50 ice fog and be able to easily hook up our trailers. Here's the pics!

Going to have to come over sometime soon and see the progress in person, looking good! :hmm:

Looking great man excited to see what comes of it..
I'm excited too! Not sure exactly how it's going to pan out, but I'm determined to get it on the road.

There's nothing too exciting to look at yet. I really want to get this thing running in the next week or so, then it'll get exciting! I did get a ignitor/coil and a bikini top for my 71, so worst case is me driving the 71 with a helmet, goggles, and snowsuit.

Been slowly plodding away on the ol' girl.
Ran all new coolant lines. I'll have to find a new rear heater later. Mine is shot.
Ran new fuel line, filter, and fixed the rusty fuel tank with JB Weld:meh:
Wired in a new ignition and got it to work.
Finally, I cleaned out the cowl vent (full of crap) and routed new drain tubes for the cowl. The old ones were rotted out and were the primary cause for my rusty floors and fuel tank.
Hooked the carb back up and got the choke, throttle, and gas peddle cables working correctly.
Also got most interior electronics working including the dome light.

Before I try to start it again I'm going to install a new clutch master and slave and need to install a speedi-sleeve on the transfer-case rear output.
Getting there!

Thanks! I got a bit tired of the 40 taking up all the garage space, so I picked up a Honda Shadow VT1100 for some Summer fun and fixed it up. I did pick up a set of 33x10.5 BFGs for the ol 40 and will hopefully get back to it this weekend. :bounce::bounce2:

You going to have the 71 out and about this summer?

Yeah, I hope so! I got a new coil/ igniter for it and a bikini, so I should be good to go once I install that stuff. I might pull it out this weekend if I get a spare moment. On a side note, the parts FJ-60 might be going to a new home. There is a dad at my church that wants to start a father/ son project and I offered the 60 to him. I figured I'd feel better about having somebody fix it up than take the sawzall to it. We'll see.

Bet the wife will be glad to see it go! Glad it will go to a good home as well.

Got a few more things done on the Cruiser the past couple of days! The stock clutch master, slave and soft line in between were roasted and the PO thought it was a great idea to thread a SAE threaded hardline into the the Master and softline, so everything got junked. I had a master and slave from a parts rig and had a line made locally to join the two.
I also got a massive rear output transfercase leak fixed with a speedi-sleeve and new seal!

The next phase will be nerve racking...starting it up and seeing if it will go! Probably this weekend, stay tuned!

Hmmm, looking for the "Like" button.

Alrighty, I gave her a go today and had a no fuel and no spark issue.
The tank seemed to flow fuel fine, so I'm assuming the fuel pump gave up. I had another fuel pump from a 1977 FJ-40, so I'll give it a go tomorrow. Both pumps seem to flow fine on the bench, so I'm not exactly sure what's going on. :hmm:
Also not sure why I'm not getting spark and am hesitant mess with the points because (a) they look and seem to function fine and (b) I have an electronic igniton I'm planning on using in the future.
I'll probably install the new pump and full electronic ignition tomorrow and go from there.
Here's a few pics of my old fuel pump vs. the 77 replacement. The 1968 pump is a bit dirty! ;)

I have a new pertronix in the box if you don't want to mess with the full install.

sounds very enticing! PM me with your price.
I did get it running again today! Bad news is that the transfer case grinds and pops out of 2 hi. sigh. back to the drawing board. I'm trying to source a transfer-case locally and if that doesn't work I'll be pulling the whole drivetrain and installing a 2f/ four speed combo.

Let me know when you will be home tomorrow. I can drive over with it.

Well, kind of a good news/ bad news situation. The good news is I got the Cruiser running and driving. The bad news is the transfercase pops out of 2 hi and grinds bad in 4 low. The motor idles great and seems relatively strong, but does smoke a bit.

I'm trying to source a good 3 speed transfercase. If I cannot, I'm still going to pull the transfercase to see what's up. Another compression test and check of the clutch are in order and I'll make a decision from there.

Mini update. I think I figured out the direction I'm going to go with this little project. I have a 2F, 4 speed, 4 speed transfercase from a 1977 FJ-40 and it will be swapped into the 1968 FJ40. I can't seem to find a three speed transfercase and I really don't want to continue dumping money into the existing drievtrain.

93jspec gave me a 4 speed transfercase with a much-needed pto block off and a pertronix kit, so now I need to dig out a motor lift. Thanks Chris, If you need any of my drivetrain from the 68, let me know.
