Do you have a pic of where the sensor is located?

you can see in above pic ..

I'm going to try to get the wiring cleaned up tomorrow, and after taking a closer look at the current wiring I'm dreading the job.

Anyone know what this whole spaghetti mess is for? Its located on the DS inner fender.

A closer look.

Also, would greatly appreciate it if someone with a HZJ80 can snap a pic of their fuse box. This is what mine looks like

Much appreciated!

That wiring on the fender has almost certainly been added or modified by a previous owner.

Agreed, looks like some sort of knob on that box wrapped in tape.

Thanks guys. I did notice a set of xenon bulbs in the glove box when I got the truck. I am assuming the PO had them on as headlights at some point before removing them. Whats the best way to go about removing those wires without tripping anything? Or best to leave it be and just clean it up?

I'd start by tracing them and figuring out what it's for before I started removing it. It might be something that needs cleaning up rather than removal.

Got help from an electrician on this and we managed to clean up the area. Turns out that mess was some kind of mod the PO did for the heater block or glow plugs if I am not mistaken. We removed it altogether.

Some shots.

Close up.

Fuse box. Is anything missing from here?

Ok so we hit a bit of a stumbling block when it came to installing the tacho pickup sensor. We cannot locate the bolt on the engine side of the fuel injection pump. I've attached a pic of it, with an arrow for reference which is where we expected to find the bolt. This is not a threaded bolted. (allen key bolt?). How do we remove this?

So I checked the part number, and lo and behold we discovered that there are two part numbers for the FIP housing: one for the tacho pickup sensor, and one without. Am I reading that correctly?

So either we can deduct two things: this rig came with a poverty pack and had no tacho on the gauge, and the PO went and installed a tacho gauge only to realize it didnt work. Or, it came with a tacho gauge, and the PO had the FIP housing changed at some point, and they installed the wrong housing?

Where do I go from here:crybaby:

I did reply in you thread in the Diesel section .. but the resume is, you can open your IP without rebuilding it .. usually you would like to do that due to the sickness " while I'm in there " coz diesel IP labor aren't cheap at all .. but maybe your Lab will open it change few seals, thread your IP body to accept tach sensor and you will be happy for less than 1K on labor and parts ..

Just got a 1990 HZJ80, and the instrument cluster has gone kaput. The truck runs on a 24V system. I managed to source a used complete instrument cluster from a 1996 FZJ80. Upon opening them both up, I found some differences, most notably in the speedo meters.

Anyone know whats the additional odometer on the top of the FZJ80 cluster?

Also, would the FZJ80 cluster work on the HZJ80 with its 24V system?

Cheers

HZJ80 cluster (no gauges are working...notice 3rd odometer)

FZJ80 cluster

95 to 97 or 98 instrument cluster were electric.90 to 94 were cable driven Speedo.

Cheers Mac....the tach on the HZJ wasnt working when I took delivery of the truck, which is why I'm looking for a new/used tach. Will look into it and let you know how it goes.

(I noticed the poverty pack models dont have tach's, but have the fuel gauge and the water temp in place. So technically I could go that route, although I suspect the whole instrument cluster would be different rather than replacing a tach dial with a fuel/temp dial).
I've just done a test run useing a gxl instrument cluster unit out of a petrol cruiser 95 97 as it is a electronic driven Speedo.although the Speedo isn't in the unit most parts work.that is the fuel volts an temp, blinkers park brake an instrument lights.everthing but the oil as there is no oil sender unit on the motor,an the taco didn't work as it too isn't connected.plus also I don't yet have the instrument cluster above the mirror.

The clusters here in aus are calibrated differently for petrol and diesel.
The speedo gos higher on the petrol and the revcounters different aswell.
There are a few other cosmetic differences and bount to be plenty of electrical differences to.
Where are you located?

Is there any particular reason your trying fzj8o clusters?
Surely here in aus there are enough desiel s wrecking.
I wish i could be of more help but if theres anything i can assist with in vic be only to happy to man

well I just wanted to see if any of the gauges worked...I knew the taco wouldn't thought of knew the oil gauge wouldnt as I done this type of stuff to a holden vc commodore you need a vdo oil sender unit.an a wire to the taco an coil.but that's a different story.but in the beginning it started out I need a diesel t belt type of speedo cluster the trip meter broke.so far no luck on a gxl instrument cluster as the speedo will fit in

G'day,
I thought I may be able to ask on this thread as it's about the voltage systems and tacho.
I swaped 11b motor for a 3b that had 24v glo plugs and as my tach goes to max when running I'm wondering if the pickup sensor on the injector pump is designed for 24v system. Or the inline pump on the 11b sends a different signal to the denso rotary ve on 3b 1990 model. The good thing is the engine is a beauty 300 thou ks the 11b had low comp in one cylinder. Cheers thanks for any reply. Neil

Will a tach (with turbo light) from a newer diesel cluster (1hdt/1hfdt) work on an older diesel cluster from an 1HZ?
