I thought you could prevent most of that if you took it up past purple, around 600 degrees, and used an oil quench. Probably is a technique, but I don't remember. I only played with the Heat N Hit boys for about 6 months. Really did not mind the heat so much, even here in Arizona summertime, but I was more interested in wrenching on tlcs.

Way off topic, but good info here:

If you have the fab equipment, why not just weld proper points into the bumper? The Tundra type hooks and others like them that point forward, are hang magnets, at least the '80 type slide in more cases. The FJC has similar forward pointing hoops, have cut lots of them off.

No. I had the ARB Hi-Lift tabs reinforced and ditched the factory tie down. But the Tundra recovery points were my fallback plan. They will hang down slightly lower on the tiny reinforcement loop but most of the bulk goes straight out on the main loop.

The only post I did when upgrading my recovery points was in my local club thread and this may be more work than you wish to put in but here is the thread in case you can glean some ideas.

Easy to add a decent recovery point to an ARB :

Backing plate on the inside of the ARB to reinforce and spread the load. Lines up with the frame horn, so a good location to apply some serious pull.

cheers,
george.
Anyone know a few sources of high-quality, HD bolt-on shackle mounts? The links I've found in posts are either dead or out of stock on these... Thanks!

That looks a bit like a weld ready to rip.

This bus on way to work had a pair of single Bolt hooks.
Bet the GVWR is quite a bit more on a bus that it is on a Cruiser.
They have a set of New Tundra hooks on Ebay for $30 shipped

Thanks! Trouble is, when you click into the mount itself--sold out. Been that way for a while now...

Another popular shackle-like mounts are the Jate rings. I find them quite sexy indeed.

Maybe try these......shackle mounts

Before getting these, I'd want to find out what is their WLL (working load limit). If the company had a lab do a destructive test on them, I'd think they'd mention that on the site.

No s***. Weld looks pretty but appears there's almost no penetration/fusion.

@RDC76 might have some good input here.
He has great recovery points in his bumper!

If you guys make recovery points something to keep in mind is that the more in-line the shackle hole with the mounting surface, the better. The clamping force of the bolts holding it against the frame allows for FAR more resistance against pulling forces than the bolts in shear alone.

That bent bracket shown earlier in the thread is a bad way to build these.. The hole being between the bolt holes and so far down acts as a lever, putting the rear bolt mostly in tension. It may be strong enough, but not nearly as strong as something designed appropriately. I'd even hazard a guess that the factory ones would be stronger, if they were welded well and in good shape.

Checking 'em out, thanks! I need something I can also tow with, so hooks and rings are out; has to be shackle-mount style. Running a non-winch ARB now, will replace with winch bumper. Planning to bolt mounts on the non-winch, weld on the winch version. Odd the Sierra Designs one doesn't explicitly state the thickness.

Anyone recognize the maker's mark on that piece?

Don't suppose anyone makes the parts FORGED instead of cast?

Or higher than 3-ton in the same configuration?
