Long time lurker here.

99 with 303k miles. Running an Ironman stage 2 lift with the diff drop, KO2 285s.

I have a hum or could even call it a growl that’s most noticeable at 40mph+. Becomes higher pitched with increased speed, and lower pitch/ louder during deceleration. Braking has no affect on the sound or pitch, no vibrations from braking. The noise persists when coasting in neutral and with 4L/H shifter in neutral.

I have changed the front wheel bearings, cv axles and rear driveshaft/u-joints, and greased the front drive shaft and u-joints chasing this noise.

As well as ball joints upper and lower, tie rod ends, lower control arms all in the past 8k miles. Changed diff fluids maybe 5k miles ago.

Inspected both knuckle/hub bearings. The driver side seemed to not spin freely so I replaced that and the humming persists(I was all but certain this was going to be my fix). Passenger side spun freely so I haven’t changed that one.

I’m really running out of ideas here so figured it’s time to ask the community. I tried searching and didn’t find quite the same descriptions I’m experiencing, if anyone knows a thread that may be helpful please share.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the input!

Welcome to the club. Have experienced this now for at least 2 years and i've extensively refurbished the front end and underside, short of driveshafts.

Does it almost pulsate like a NEEE EEE NEEE EEE NEEE EEEE (IDK I tried LOL)

Haha, happy to join the club! I’m not sure about pulsing but it does kind of drone.

I’m beginning to suspect maybe a diff bearing, but from reading the forums it seems like it’s pretty uncommon for that to be the case, but then again 300k is a lot of miles so who knows. I may cave and take it to the dealership to see if they can diagnose but hopefully someone might have some ideas and chime in.

If there's anything I would bet money on, it's the diff.

The diff can make the whining noise when very cold, so it might make sense that it would be making a similar noise if the oil is low/wrong or if a component is falling.

How is the CV joints in the rear drive shaft? especially the one near the pinion?
