Does anyone know what a steelie weighs?

I need to ship home a set of 33 X 9.5 X 15 tires I just bought used. I have one here, but it's mounted on a steelie. (I need to subtract the weight of the steel rim so I know the tire weight.)

Shipping tires is expensive and every lb. counts.

(if you happen to know the weight of a BFG AT 33 X 9.5 X 15 tire only, even better!)

I've looked on line, and info for the weight of the tire ranges from 30 to 42 lbs. 12 lb. variance, times 4 tires, makes a big difference in freight costs.

Thanks very much!

Awesome! Thank you!

This helps a lot.

I'll figure out my tire weight but I would guess about 35 lbs. each. That's 140 lbs. and your 5 steelies were 138 lbs. Just curious how they shipped (UPS or ???) and if you know what the rate was and the distance.

I need to find the cheapest way to ship these. Greyhound bus is $200, but I'm told UPS is cheaper.

Thanks for the help! :)

OK, so weighed the rim and tire. 67.8 lbs. (Tire is a 33X9.5X15 BFG MT)

Subtract either the 23.95 lbs. reported by Fast Eddy or 27.6 lbs. by lvshust, (I'll play it safe and use the lighter rim - making my tire weight more) and you get:

67.8 minus 23.95 = 43.85 lbs for the tire alone. Ouch. That's heavy.

I don't know if the AT's I'm shipping weight more or less but I'm going to use 44 lbs. per tire.

According to UPS, 176 lbs shipped coast to coast (South Carolina 29407 to California 92675) it will cost...

OK, I give up. I was on UPS website for a half hour. First it was $1,200 so something was wrong. I went back and started over. After inputting all of the info the site froze up. I went in again and did it all over and at the very end it said "quote not available at this time". Fun, fun.

I'll try later I guess. :bang:

I figured I should end the story on this...

After all of my calculations, I was way off. Not sure why, but each tire weighed in at 38.5 lbs each. (perhaps since they are used, they weigh less since some tread is gone.)

Anyway, the best way to ship was two parcels, each one consisting of two tires taped together. Greyhound was the cheapest and they have quoted 4 days transit. Pretty much coast to coast for 4 tires was $177.90 including the fuel surcharge.
