A tool like this with the appropriate size pins to fit the holes in the nut. A "spanner" or "pin wrench"

huh so that is a nut... is that stock?

i guess that explains why i couldn't pull it off... i'll try to un-thread it with a BFM and a flathead screwdriver - I wont be re-using any of these parts just need to get them off for a disc upgrade

Can't speak to the stockness or not, but a good round punch and a hammer might get it off.

looks stock to me - you'd need a 50mm socket

a hammer and punch/screwdriver will work - but do not throw those nuts away, you'll need them again for assembly - same for the tab washer behind

look at pic #1.. don't think a 50mm socket will work on that perfectly round nut which is my trouble. and no worries i bought new ones! :)

thanks for the tips guys

Hell, a pipe wrench or channel locks could get it off too. If condition isn't important when done. Shouldnt be too tight.:meh:

I have never seen a nut like that on a LandCruiser...I'm guessing it's not stock.

If you use a punch or screwdriver to loosen that be VERY careful

ah, sorry, looked at pic #2

are there allen set screws in any of the holes?

I thought I remembered something about some Ford trucks having a spindle nut like that. It's like two nuts that ratchet and lock into each other if I remember correctly. I didn't know they ever made something similar for Toyota axles.

J**p Dana 44 Spindle Nut

That was the original setup that was on my 1974 when I took it apart. I believe it had the Warn auto lockouts on there.

There are 1 or 2 allen head set screws...I can see one at the 4 o'clock position. Back those out (check all the holes to be sure there aren't more than one) and then back off the round nut. A large channellock works perfectly. You'll find a round ring behind it with slots for those allens to lock into, and a single inner tab that keeps it from rotating on the spindle.

A little brake clean outta show you what your removing a little easier.

Thanks guys I'll spray some cleaner to get a closer look - it has manual hubs but it might have had auto at some point

well good call on the allen screws - these parts are undamaged - if someone needs them let me know

Reviving an old thread for some pics.

I started to clean up and service my Warn Automatic Hubs. Found this thread when I could not figure out how to get it apart.

These are the Allen Head set screws backed out slightly.

This is the "nut" and locking ring.

This is it apart. Lots of little pieces. The funny shaped things are some sort of plastic. They are the friction parts to make the hub lock in when its set on "auto". Another gear is missing form pic. It was in parts cleaner.
This was the passenger side. When I took the drivers side apart the cage that holds the bearings was cracked. :censor:

Ordered new Warn hubs but I need to get studs. The Auto Hubs used long bolts to hold the hub on. Also needed to replace the funky lock ring and nut with standard spindle lock tab and nut.
