How bad would this 40's engine bay scare you?

IP,
i am not trying to be an a****** here, i have been in your shoes many many times over the decades. you have a desire and the desire causes one to look at the veneer instead of the meat.
what you want to look at is the rust that does show, the patch job on the rad spigot, the rust on the air cleaner, the alternator bracket, you can not get rust like that and have a body that looks that shiny ...
my advice would be to shop for a truck that is original shape, faded paint, worn tires, tired interior ... then you can see what you are actually buying.

As a point of reference, my truck is probably worth something less than the advertised price of this one and it wouldn't take much to put a showroom finish on it and everything about it is solid.

I'm not taking your comments derogatorily. In fact, I take criticism very well and appreciate all advice given especially in situations where I have no expertise. I'm not emotionally attached to this truck and to be honest it's a good bit more than I'd want to spend. But I am willing to spend more money for less work/cost on the back end. I'm also in no rush but do want to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. I thought this might have been one of those opportunities but it doesn't appear to be at this point. I'll keep looking.

I agree with the other guys that price is 10k too high. This one is very close to me and I can check it out and go over it.

I did see that one but the fact that it's an amalgamation of 3 different years turns me off a bit.

Technically speaking, mine is an amalgamation of the best parts from multiple years so don't be afraid of it being a mutt unless you intend this to be an investment.

Ok, guys, after sufficiently bursting my bubble :flipoff2: on this one, now I have a line on a beige '79 in Gaithersburg. Some of you might know this one. It was restored about 15 years ago by a guy named Donny. He said he wheeled it at GSMTR a few times. He had it for sale a couple years ago and then took it off the market. I reached out to him a couple weeks ago to see if he still had it and if he had thought about selling it. He texted me today and said he was going to put it up for sale and asked if I wanted to come look at it. Any chance I can get someone to run up to Gaithersburg with me to look at this 40?

I know donnie, from dirt bikes. I've heard stories of the 40 but never seem it.

Yeah he said he's pretty much given up 4 wheeling for dirt bikes.

Ok guys. Here's Donny's 40. I took 30 pictures so here's a link instead of putting them all in the thread. He did a full frame off restoration in '95 after driving it back from AZ. The original color was mustard. All replacement parts were OEM. It has factory AC and power steering. All the electrical worked as far as I could see and he even had the little plug-in light in the glove box. The tub and front clip are both factory sheet metal. The winch works and it had ARBs in the front and rear diffs. The truck hasn't been used much for the last 4-5 years so it's going to need a little work to get it in shape. Probably not more than a few weekends of work. We drove around the block and it ran fine. It does have an exhaust leak but I don't think it's too bad for the original exhaust (still has the cat and as you'll see all the emissions crap). It has a transmission with a lower 1st gear ratio, he said it was a Japanese bus tranny or something. He's also going to throw in all the spare parts, stock transfer and tranny, seats, etc.

As usual, all opinions are welcomed and appreciated.

That is a great looking truck!

I don't recognize the transfercase... '79+ (maybe it was 1908?) had the parking brake on the axles, not the T-case. Is it an NP 203?How much does he want for it? I' have a number I think it's worth but don't want to complicate any potential deal.

EDIT: The more I look, the more I see things that don't compute to me.

Could be an H41 t-case

well, to me, the price is up there but it does look solid.
i would say it would be worth the price of a ticket to go look at it in person.
if it is as good as in the pics then it would make an excellent candidate for another refurb and enjoy. or even a diesel swap ...
