Time to part with my 1978 FJ40. Bought almost 2 years ago to the day. Has been sitting in the garage collecting dust since winter for the most part and it's time for it to go to someone that has the time to enjoy her. She still starts up every time no matter how long she has been sitting (been about 2 months now before today and she started on the first try when I pulled her out of the garage to take a few pictures). Below are links to the build thread from the previous owner and a thread I started about what has been done since I've acquired her. Have added gas struts for the lift gate, new felt for the windows, replaced the fuel lines under along the frame (both rubber and stainless steel), and installed the lower dash pads in addition to removing the spare tire carrier (still being sold with the truck, just not currently mounted) since I last updated the thread.

very nice 40 and GLWS, but that's a early 40, not a '78

You are kinda right, check out the linked threads but here's the summary.

78 Frame and drivetrain - titled as a 78
72/73 Tub and Body (can't remember exact combination off the top of my head - tub one year rest of body the other)
75 or 76 hard top

Just about the exact 40 combination I was looking for, later drivetrain with the barn doors/lift gate in the back, and red to boot (not freeborn red).

It's titled as a 78 so that's what I decided to advertise it as.

(I didn't read through any of the two links provided.)

Typically the vehicles VIN is stamped into the frame. There is also one (or more) data plates with the VIN elsewhere on the body. If those numbers don't all agree, trying to register the vehicle in another state could be a miserable experience for a buyer. Even then I believe mixing frames and body parts is, technically speaking, illegal.

It looks like the hardtop sides are 75-76 because I can see the holes in the rear for the upper ambulance door hinges.

Aren't back-up lights required by law in Virginia?

Frame and body VIN do match, as to whether the way it was done is legal or not I don't know. I do have a clear title with the VIN on it matching that on the vehicle. Have had problems with improper VINs on titles before in VA and all I've had to do is take the vehicle to the state police and they checked the VIN on the frame.

The hardtop is a 75 or 76 (not sure which one), didn't realize it didn't match up with anything else til after I bought it, wasn't a big deal for me. This is addressed in the thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...0-no-name.html and one of the earlier responses on this thread.

Checked with my local inspection station before I purchased without backup lights and they said it would pass, and they passed it. below is an excerpt from the VA State Police inspection procedure:

6. - INSPECT OTHER LIGHTS FOR: (non headlight)

  • Approved type, proper bulbs, and condition of lenses, wiring and switch.
  • Aim of fog and driving lamps.
  • Illumination of all lamps and proper color of lenses.
(NOTE: Every vehicle must have a rear lamp showing a red light to the rear, a white light illuminating the rear license plate; vehicles over 7 feet wide or extending 4 inches or more beyond the front fender extremes must be equipped with approved clearance lamps and reflex reflectors. (Include load when measuring.)
Nothing there about back up lights.

Thanks for the interest. Not trying to hide anything and will gladly answer/address any concerns/issues spotted.

Any rust issues?
No rust issues. Take a look at the first link in the first post for a look at the frame off painting. I'll post a couple of underside pictures in this thread too. Has been garage kept since I bought it just over two years ago with only ~2,000 miles put on it.

Why are you selling?

Simply because I'm not driving it (it's my second second vehicle) and it needs to go to someone that can use/enjoy it more than me. When I bought it I had been without a Cruiser for a few years (4?) and wanted to get back into it. After the purchase I have found that life has gotten in the way with too many other things going on to find time for it. It sucks but that's the way it goes.

Front Seat and Dash Pic

More to come of the front seat and dash. For some reason it reoriented when I uploaded. I plan on having better pictures tomorrow.
