Newbie, buying a '86 HJ60 in Samoa. (polynesia baby!) Love the site, learning heaps already. This LC is frame no. HJ60-044715, model HJ60LG-MN. Left-hand drive (we get both here). Not sure where it came from, maybe US, as it's LHD. Was repowered this year with 6cycl Toyota diesel. The PO doesnt have many details. I know the PS is fkd, will worry about that soon enough. Manual tranny, no pwr locks or windows (thank goodness).
Question: This has square headlights, and I've gathered from this site and others that 60's should have round headlights and square ones are "only?" found on the 62's. Please correct me?
Thanks!

the rest of the world received different models than the US, so you can't go by just what we got.

not a whole lot of help. but good luck.

Hi and welcome. Do you know which country the 60 was originally sold in? I didnt think the square headlights arrived until 88:confused:
Sometimes owners change them.
On the bright side of things it appears you have a 5 sp. Thats another thing not sold in the US models

Which set of Islands are you in in Samoa? Western or American? That would be the ultimate factor in tracking down where your truck came from. As Samoa is an independent country and American Samoa is an Unorganized/Unincorporated Territory of the US, most things there shouldn't be much different, but the majority of Vehicles in the Territory should be of US spec, whereas those in Samoa would probably fall under rest of world. As it is an 86, it is unlikely the square headlights were stock, and if it's a diesel swap, it could be from anywhere in the world that drives their cars from the wrong seat. Also, if the VIN is 16 digit, it is probably a US truck, whereas the rest of the world could be any if I recall, but I may be wrong on that count. Anyhow, sounds like you got a great score. See if you can bring it up here to the northern tip of the Polynesian Triangle. There's a few cruiser heads up here, and tonnes of Toyota gearheads, and I'm sure we can get you with some good familiar foods and a few nice trails too. :)

If his frame # starts with HJ60 its highly unlikely to be a US truck.

My guess is its Canadian. They had 5sp HJ60 lhd

All of the diesels were branded HJ60 right through to 1989 in aus, at least my 1989 one is. All the australian 62 series updates are fitted (dash, headlights, interior) but still called a hj60

If you Google the model number (model HJ60LG-MN) you get a year range of 08/1987 - 01/1990 . That would correspond to a 62 series (model year 88 thru 90) in the US / Canada.

Do you have a VIN number? My Canadian spec HJ60 has a 17 digit VIN number.

Sounds like my truck, I have a '89 2h 6 cylinder diesel 5spd with square headlights. The Vin says that it is a HJ60 (JT1WOHJ60*** etc) Mine is RHD, but I would have thought you would be able to buy a similar version in Europe which would be LHD.

'86 sounds early for square headlights though - is the year correct?

Is yours 24volt?

Thanks for the replies. I'm in independent Samoa (Upolu island). So the truck could have come from anywhere that is LHD. The dash has the round gages. It is 5 speed. I'm calling it an '86 because i found a site that deciphers the model number and said the "G" meant 1986. Yes it is repowered with a diesel, but the first engine was also diesel (2H). I suppose the front end could have been swapped, but have no other reason to think that it was.
So I bought the truck, and it's sweet! The PO said that the a/c was working until just recently and now the powersteering is really hard when the truck is first getting moving. Please remind me why the two are related again? I've seen posts saying that when the p/s goes so does the a/c?

Your vehicle and frame number come up in my parts program as a "General" market vehicle (i.e. not US, not Japan, not Europe) with a build date of July 1988. There should be an ID tag on the B-pillar when you open the drivers side door with the build date on it. The grille diagram for this vehicle shows the four square headlights.

bump. So I've been driving a few weeks now, and she overheats badly on the cross island hill. It's an unavoidable hill, 600m high and steep, so I'll need to get her right so as not to overheat. Here's some details, would appreciate any advice. after 10 min or so of steep climbing (2nd gear), the temp is over to the red. I pull over, rad boiling, and let her cool down, top off with water, and make it up and over the hill. so far, this is the only time she over heats. I just flushed out the rad, and then added alumaseal, which seemed to stop the leaks that i could see. now, I'm not really sure where the water is leaking out from, but after she cools down, she takes in almost 2L. What else can be done to help keep her cool when climbing?
thanks!

thought id also mention the heater/ac fan doesnt work at all. the blue a/c light will come on, but no compressor power. tried smacking it, and it makes a weak sound (i think) but no air from vents. The rear vents work however. not sure if this is related to my overheating on the hill prob., but i can't run the heater to suck heat from the engine.
peace

IF you have leaks, this means your cooling system won't be able to build pressure. The radiator cap is set for something like 13 psig. This increase in pressure will raise the boiling point of the water from 100degC (212F) to something like 120C (245F).

If you are going slow up the hill (which is sounds like you are) you should make sure that your fan clutch is working properly. I'm not sure how to test this. I can here mine engaging and dis-engaging on the freeway when it's hot. Another option would be to replace the fan cluch with either no clutch (mechanical fan always turning with the engine) or an electric fan. Also, make sure you have a fan shroud to help pull the air through the radiator.

Also might want to check the different bits on the cooling system. My FJ60 overheated badly and blew the head apart because there was salt in the water pump that kept it from pumping coolant through the engine. This was due in part because the previous owner's wife didn't know how to drive stick, so it sat for over a year next to the ocean while he was in Iraq. That's where all the rust is from, along with a seized up water pump. It ran fine for 5 minutes at a time, but when the salt got going and piled up in the pump, she quit working. It could also be a thermostat issue (stuck shut). If you can, you can pull the thermostat out and put it in some hot water and see if it expands (opens up) to check that it's working properly. If it doesn't, then it's could be the thermostat. Or, probably even more common, check the rad cap. If the gasket underneath it is cracked, it's probably not creating the proper pressure, and it's not keeping the coolant in liquid form, so it boils off into the overflow tank. Those would be the first three I would check.

The order would be more like:
Rad cap
Fan
Thermostat
Water pump
Radiator

Going from easiest to check to the most PITA.
