As part of an effort to make my daily driver HJ61, 12-HT, H55F cruiser more comfortably at highway speeds and suitable for long interstate drives, I am replacing the stock 4.10 gears with 3.70 gears. I bought complete axles out of an FJ60 for $400. Apparently the axles had been sitting on the ground for about 7 years. When I finally got into the 3rd members, I found some rust on parts that were higher than the oil level in the position they sat for so long. My question is

1 - how bad is this?
2 - is it worth trying to clean up (how clean does it need to be)?
3 - should I request to get my money back?

Note: This is my first time to ever dive into axles/diffs, so I know nothing about them. Pics are of the rear diff. Thanks.

I would try and return them, I wouldn't use them.
find better ones.

That's on the ragged edge. If you can get your money back, I would. You might be able to run those, but you'd want to check on them after several thousand miles. What you might not be seeing is bearing damage in the diff., as well.

I think those gears will be fine personally. I would clean/wirewheel the ring gear and throw them in. Is the one out of the front in the same condition? I would generally use the pot that came out of the front in the rear anyway because of the chance there is less mileage on it because of the ability to unlock it. I would put that one you think is not up to snuff in the front.I don't think you'll have any major problems.
