Came home and found a huge branch from a tree took out my sunroof and left this nasty dent above the driverside door. Any thoughts on the repair of either? I am most worried about the frame dent - never had that happen and not sure how big a job that is to repair. I also don't have any idea what either might cost but am worried neither is cheap. This is a great 2003 LX470 that otherwise is in great shape.

Any help welcome!

the dent can get pulled and as long as just the glass broke, you can just replace the glass.
was the tree on your property?
did you check homeowners or car insurance?

The tree was on a strip of land between the sidewalk and the road. Some say I am responsible for the tree while others say the city is - not 100% clear. But I am assuming the repairs on my problem...

No frame damage, this is just a dent to the pillar. Probably doesn't effect the performance of anything. Can have it fixed at a collision repair place or just leave it if it doesn't bother you. Sunroof glass replacement is easy enough, but might be something to go to dealer for so you get original quality glass and seals.

The comprehensive portion of your insurance policy will cover this, depending on the deductible it's usually no big deal and doesn't effect future rates with the claim.

Thanks. Any advice on where to get the sunroof glass replaced? I have called about 6 body shops and none do sunroofs.

I would start by making a claim with your insurance. Sometimes they are useless on repairs, etc. but often they can point you in the right direction.

the sunroof glass is fairly easy to change yourself.
if you want the same tint, it would have to be from a LX 470.
if the tint doesn't matter to you a Landcruiser one will work for you.

used or new either way.

yesterday I inquired with an auto glass shop about sunroofs and they said no problemo but they have to go through Toyota for the sunroof. Doesn’t look hard to replace the glass DIY style, but the part itself is $525 and then I think you’ll need the gasket for another $70. Can probably use your old interior trim pieces and hardware - unless the branch tweaked some internal parts on the sunroof assembly

Thanks - the issue now is that it has been torrential rain here and the headliner near the sunroof is wet on the inside, despite having a cover on the car. Not sure if that can just dry and be ok or if there is potential for other damage?

There can be various electrical issues caused by this, not to mention eventual corrosion, so get that leak corrected quickly and dry it out if you can. I'd want somebody like the dealership to do the work personally as they know the specs and can be sure there's no other damage that could allow water past a new sunroof. Let your insurance cover it and pay the deductible I say, and that should cover the body damage as well, tho I would probably leave it if it was on my own dime, I think these rigs look great showing signs of the long lives they led. Just like plastic surgery, it's a personal preference how much age you're comfortable showing!
BTW I believe that's Sand Dollar Pearl, one of my favorite colors on an LX!

This is why you want to have 'comprehensive' coverage on your insurance and not park under trees.

Had to have some body work done on my 80 series last year (damage caused in a parking lot, hit and run). My deductible was $50.00 for a $1700.00 repair.

Does the comprehensive cover hit and run incidents as well? I recently added comprehensive insurance upto 50K to all my vehicles.

The good news is I have a $0 deductible and this is a comprehensive claim (I didn't know this when I first posted). I have USAA. The estimate I got from the dealer was for $4500. That was before the inside headliner got wet. Hopefully things will go smoothly from here on out. And while I admire those who like to leave the dings, I don't think that does well in re-sale, which is something I have to consider.

Mine did and that is how it was filed (twice now) for damage in a parking lot with no witnesses.

More rain here in ATL for the next couple days- get out and seal that sunroof off asap.
