I bought this from a mud member about a few week ago and he said it is a 4wd gear box from an 80'. I believe its from a '79 from what i read they made the return line smaller then then high pressure line for a 79(not sure why). I tried installing it today however, I realized the fitting does not fit that came with the jt outfitters kit as shown in the picture. Is this a 4wd gear box or 2wd?

the part number jt outfitters sent me for the return nipple is 44416-35020. I then order 44416-34010 from toyota. That did not work either. I believe the fitting to be 14x1.5mm. I don't have time to make it to the junk yards on the weekends so I prefer to order something online. Does anyone know what size the return nipple is for a '79 4wd power steering or is there something i can rig from home depot/autozone? thanks

I remember reading several threads about this when I was looking at PS options. I don't have the answer for you, sorry, but have you done an exhausting thread search? I know it can be daunting but I'm sure your question is answered somewhere already. I recall this very question. Good luck, I will be doing the same some day.

You have the correct power steering gear box for "mini truck" power steering install into a 40. The Toyota return fitting I have listed that will work is part number 44416-34010. There is also another fitting that is straight but I don't have that part number.

so the return nipple is smaller then the thread on the high pressure? if this is so, what is the part number for this return nipple so i can order it. Thanks

IIRC normally the return is actually a larger diameter thread pattern than the pressure line is.

So having a smaller one is pretty odd.

Typically the fittings are 16 and 17mm

I ran into one minitruck PS box with an oddball smallish fitting, and while I was at the boneyard, I found a Nissan 4x4 truck and the return PS fitting screwed right into the Toyota box. Bring a few tools and go shopping at the pick-and-pull.

get some random coarse spline metric bolts and figure out what the actual thread pitch is..

Interestingly enough, I have the same box. The pressure fitting and the return lines are the exact same size and thread. I too ordered a 44416-34010 and it did not fit - it was far too big. (Which led me to this thread.)[STRIKE] The threads are the same as that on a FJ60 high pressure side so if you have a broken or bad HP line you could use that nut and flare a tube or cut the end off the HP tube.[/STRIKE]
Edit: That is wrong. I just checked and they are smaller than the pressure side.

Anyone have an idea on the part number?

With Poser we discovered it is a 14mm x 1.5 thread.

So I tried one of these because I could get it locally:

It did not work because the nut bottomed out before the o-ring hit. Next I am going to try one of these:

Or something similar with the small brass inverted flare adapter in the hole.

I have been unable to find a 14mm x 1.50 threaded inverted flare nut to run some 5/16 or similar steel tubing through.

The straight fitting is the 44416-35020. It is also too big.

I am still in search of a 14mm x 1.5 return fitting.

look on any older toyota in the bone yard. I took a small one off a corolla yrs ago.

Naaah Just go to the Pick N Pull and get a hand full of different thread Japanese return fittings. For sure, one or more will work. While you are there get a bunch of Toyota hazard switches to sell to the FZJ80 people for center diff lock switches for $20 a pop to pay for your time.
