Saw a lot of vintage Toyota switches up on e-bay a couple weeks ago and bid the min bid not thinking I would win. Well I was the only one who bid so I won the lot. I didn't even really look at what I was bidding on very well.

Today after a week of the box sitting around I opened it up. Nothing really special. A headlight switch that had the same connections minus the little bulb that lights the knob in the later 40's. I'm sure it could be used as a replacement if you didn't care about having a lit switch.

Then I pulled this hazard switch out of the pile and it caught my eye.

It looked very similar to the standard lit headlight switch on later cruiser. So I grabbed one of the late switches to compare. It was a perfect match to the lit headlamp switch knob except it said Hazard in yellow letters.

So now I wanted to know what it was out of. All the description I had on the e-bay page was it was out of a Toyota truck. But which year and model? There are no standard Toyota part numbers on the side. Just sae-qc71 and then 89-2.

I got to thinking it would be a cool mod to ad to a cruiser. SO I started looking at the wiring and the connectors. The connectors were the same as a standard later hazard switch but that is where the similarities ended as the pin outs were in a different order and where this hazard switch has 7 pin used in the connector the cruiser hazard has 9.

So who out there has an idea what this came out of so I can start looking at wiring diagrams? It's easily to see there are a couple non soldered terminals on the lit hazard switch which would give it 9 spots. If they all performed the same function as the standard hazard switch I'd be willing to give it a shot. Lord knows I have a few hazard switches to play around with.

Warning if your head hurts just thinking about if it will work or not do not scroll down.

It will work. I'm not sure of the amps the switch can take but the wire gage is much bigger on the lit switch than the cruiser switch so I would assume so. Someone will have to find out beside me since I have LEDs in all my lights so I'm not concerned about load. Will take moving some pins around and jumping a few but it should work.

Someone care to check behind me? My continuity tester confirmed my findings. Now all we need to find out is what the switch is out of.

just for info

I did the LED mod on all of my lights also. I really like the significant decrease in amperage drawn from the battery. In the future if you need to replace the internal bulb in the headlight switch you can get one in LED that works. My bulb was out and I found one in LED when doing the mod. I got all of my LED's from Super bright LED's.

models at least later than 9/72

my early 72 hazard switch has a red label embossed

I would think that is a pre 7/70 switch.

In that thread I mentioned the two flasher systems used a 7 pin switch, so look at early schematics compared to later...

Ooops, missed the fact that the switch is LIT!

I have the 9 pin switch completely documented with where all the wires go if you need it?

Ah hell it just keeps getting better.

Look what I found. Notice the wiper switch. It's lit also. Those Celica restoration guys are gonna hate us.

That's just awesome, You could have a pretty awesome dash with those fancier swtiches. I've been wanting a variation headlight switch for driving lights, looks like that one pictured would work nicely and not be confused with the "lights" knob for the headlights.

I just wonder how clunky that Celica looked with all the large pull knobs on the dash.

how cool would it be to have a different horn hooked up to each of those horn buttons!?!?

Bad pun warning

If each of those buttons were hooked to a different horn- you could play the Dixie horn thingy from "The Dukes of Hazard":D

Thought I would post the 2/71 Hazard switch data in this thread for anyone contemplating this "switch".

All labels are from the schematic so they can be traced easily.

So? What's the update? Iwant to see these hooked up and glowing! :grinpimp:

Well I won the bid on e-bay for those 3 switches. Kicker is they were in AU. So it will be a couple weeks.

In the mean time I have some work to do before the new ones go in. :D

But at least I'll know what all 3 will do.

Uh... Yeah, that's a bit of work to get done.... :D

Well at least hook them up on the bench when they arrive. I really like this idea and have started searching for Celicas in the junk yards. Not many around here at all...
