Have you ever wondered at what speed your unfastened FJ40 hood will gain sufficient lift to fly up and hit your roof? Well no need for you to run your own experiment. It’s 54 mph.

My worst infraction was backing out of a parking spot in a hurry, not paying attention and managing to roll into a concrete bollard. Hit was directly on the spare tire but the QEM swingout made a nice crease into the DS ambulance door. Can't see it but it just sucks to know its there and that its your own fault.

My '72 and '73 projects both have evidence of this happening in the past.

I did that in my '66 MGB ~30 years ago on a rainy night after wiping the moisture out of the distributor cap. Aluminum hood. That sucked too.

i think my current project has actually suffered the hood injury if i look close. there are loads of dings and dents all over it so i’m not too worried. @Kayaker im sorry for you. yours is such a pretty truck. that hurts!!

100 bucks!! Where the hell is this?? In 2023? Mine flew up, was a lot worse than yours.. but I don’t think I could get it done up here for $500! That’s fantastic. I’m glad for you that he could fix it. This happened at 55-60 IIRC.

I dont recall if I posted previous but my hood will flap at 40 - 42, it hangs over the bib a bit which gives it good lift.

Did you inspect the front lip of the cap for fiberglass damage. That must have hit it with a lot of force to damage the hood that bad.

I thought that plastic clip in the middle of the front gutter was supposed to protect the hood from damage..

As with any lift, it may be 54 MPH but what was the headwind ?

Yes you must take relative wind into the equation. If at stand still the the head wind is 10kts then it very well could have been closer to 64 miles per hour.

I've never forgot to latch the hood but my spare tire has swing out way more times than I would like to admit.

I had done that “forgot to latch” on my ‘74 dozens of times back in the 1970’s. Even now 2 yrs ago I would usually leave it undone UNTIL I had seen your post. My ‘75 has the mount for that hood release so I bought one from Cruiser Corp and added it in…. Works to minimize that forgetfulness

So here we are a year plus down the road and it never occurred to me to check the wipers for damage during this incident. I don’t drive my LC much when its raining so that’s why it took so long to discover. Turns out both shafts to which the wiper arms are attached took a whack and were bent pretty badly. Only took a couple of swipes of the wipers before they ceased up altogether. Fortunately I was able to disassemble the unit and straighten out the shafts. Lesson here: if this happens to you, check your wipers. Don’t do like me and discover it only when you need working wipers!
