Bought a lifted (4") 72 earlier this year and nothing to grab onto when trying to get into the cab. Im sure it would be quite comical if you all could see this lol. I bought some grab handles from a vendor and planned to install on the door frame above the glass. After receiving them and seeing how small the screws are I thought Id ask the vendor and they replied "they are not made to support any amount of weight they are only made to have something to hold onto when driving over rough terrain" . What are you all using to get in and out of the cab? Not as young or limber as I used to be and need a little help getting in. My rig doesn't have any handles anywhere.

Toyota added grab on the driver's side above door on late 40 series.

I also like these off the FJ62 and 80 series for side of the windshield frame.

These are not going for getting in but getting out. Sliding out wears the cover on the side and breaks down the foam. Lifting while gets out slow that down.

The ones I ordered look similar to the top pic you provided but the mounting screws look awfully small.

Are these standard on our trucks? They have no problem with me hanging off of them..

I have a set of those. I asked the forum many years ago if anyone else had them trying to figure out a manufacturer. No one at the time recognized them.
I have had no problem with hanging off them either. Mine originally came off a 79. One on each side. I now have them on the passenger side of two of my Cruisers to help the wife out.

These are OEM handles for the 40 series except for the bottom handle in the second picture which is from a 60 series.

These handles except for the two black one are from early 70 series. The black ones are door pulls for late 40 series and early 70 series.

Spacing for screws match 40 series 70 series for each type. Over door and door pull spacings are different.

Oops, I missed the above post while typing. Thanks for the info on the stock FJ40 grab handles.

Interesting idea. I use the grab handle on the front pillar of my 100 series and was thinking about mounting something similar in my FJ40, but didn't want to weaken the front window frame or have it flex too much.

Anyone know where I can find the metal ones shown above? Might be a better choice.

Would the mounting holes line up with the existing bolt holes above the driver/passenger windows in a stock 79 hardtop, maybe mounted in the forward position (first two bolt holes)?

Doubt you would have any problem with flexing with two fixed nuts on windshield using the 90° section from the glass. Small straight section with 90° bends on either side would be pretty strong.

Thanks for the feedback.

On the windshield frame is a pretty handy spot for a grab bar on the 100 series, not in your way, and you won't bump your head on it.

Forward on the door frame is good spot too. Made easier if I can use the existing bolt holes, which should be plenty stout. The oem ones above look like they might be too short to reach both forward holes (10 9/16" OC)? Hard to tell from the pics.

I may try to find a pair of oem upper grab handles (not door handles) as shown above and try them out.

The factory grab handles started 10/81. They are too short to fit standard three screws. The extra fixes nut is between the back two screws. Towards the front would have made more sense. Personally like the grab bar on the side of the windshield frame. My FJ62 has one on the driver's side. I added one to the passenger's side which more convenient than the over the door grab handle or the bar above the glovebox for getting in. I also installed these grab bars between the B pillar and door header for rear passengers.

The threaded holes were already there. Can't understand why we only got the soft handle above the door instead of these. Same with Toyota dropping the A pillar grab bar for the driver on 5th generation 4Runner.

I'm planning to put a couple of M8 rivnuts in the A-pillar (red dots in the picture) and get a handle from somewhere. I mainly run with a bikini top and tube doors, so it won't be in the way of the upper door frame...I'll probably do the same to the section above the door when I have the hard top on.

My 40 is a resto-mod, so I don't really mind if it's not an original handle. I just need something to help my old-ass and my wife's short-ass get in with the 2.5" lift and 33's! LOL

I just grab the windshield frame in that location when I hop in. Your wife would probably appreciate the handle though
