1973 FJ40 - Can't pull out the starter. It's hung up. Anyone pulled a starter to find out the touch points off a 73?

Something is hung up and it won't release. Any one have history of removing a starter on a 73 FJ40?

Usually they fall right off. Is yours held on by bolts, a bolt and a stud or two studs? Could your starter drive gear be hung up on the flywheel ring gear? Maybe try rocking the vehicle back and forth in gear? I'd probably just start by whacking the starter with a big mallet a few times and see if it comes loose but that's just how I do things.

That red wire pulled from the crimp connector on the solenoid looks scary. Hopefully the other end got disconnected from the battery first. Not fuse fused wire at that gauge will definitely create a spark. Two mounting just loosened and a snap by mallet should break the start looks and not fall to the ground.

Maybe they put it on with lots of loctite or epoxy because of cracks. Upper nut on a stud to hold it in place when putting it on/off and a lower bolt. Try bumping it with a block of wood and BFH from the bottom side. I usually take the wires off first and put them back on last.

What are touch points? Which fasteners have you removed? Post a picture of what you have done so far.
