A short between the fuse panel and the brake switch.
having similar issues w/a new purchase as well; can you elaborate ?
still can't figure mine out,works with hatch up not down..........I see you have the ol' droopy rear wiper.
Not really, I think we got lucky. The wiring diagram indicates that the fuse panel goes directly to the brake switch. Using a volt meter, we tested the brake switch and it was fine. We also had power at the brake fuse, and the fuse was good, but for some reason current was not getting to the brake switch. We knew this was obviously where the problem was, so we tried a few different fuses and wiggled things around a bit, and finally got them to work.
I’m still pretty green when it comes to the 80-series, so I don’t know if electrical issues are this prevalent across the board, but my truck seems like it has loose electrical connections everywhere.
I have to jiggle the headlight harness to get the lights to work, the switch for the brights does not work, blown bulbs everywhere... with the exception of the trailer harness, everything is stock and unmolested. The stereo is original, so no one has been in there splicing things up either.
I hope this helps. I think you’ll just have to get your volt meter and start chasing wires though.

That sounds like a broken wire. The common droopy wiper is caused by a worn bushing allowing the linkage arm to fall down onto the steel pin. Annoyingly, you can't buy a new bushing from Toyota, but I think the whole linkage is around $50. Part 85170-60070.

With the help of @cwwfj60 Brake lights and license plate lights are off the punch list... she’s completely legal now.
