The worst part about rebuilding old junk is all the time you have to spend on clean up.

Found a real nice bearing on the front output shaft of my junkyard nose cone.

A little oven cleaner, parts washer and sand blast treatment has this stuff ready.

Lol, for a second I thought you where going to clean the bearing.

Got my hands on the plasma cutter again today.
So my radiator mounts got the whack.

And some clearance on the xfer case cross-member. Dave if you're lurking out there, sorry I had to cut up your beautiful work.

Then back at the Orion build up. I found I need to massage the stepped thrust washers for proper clearance, so move on to some sub assy. Front drive shift housing is ready with the new twin stick shaft. A note to anyone considering the twin stick from AA: The shift shaft came to me with no edge breaks on any machined surface. I had to work several edges so the shaft wouldn't cut the o-ring seal and dust boot on installation. Pitiful.

I hope this isn't indicative of the quality control on the Orion parts

Tanks! The work has slowed some this week, trying to sort out the lack of expected end play with stepped thrust washers in the Orion. Waiting for a new set now.

And apparently I need more supervision on thinking things through with moving the drive train. Another drive shaft angle thread got me thinking and and re evaluating the resultant compound angle on the rear drive line. Preliminary re measurements are looking like I may to redo some mounts to make the shaft happy. Ug!

The jury is out until I get the complete xfer case in there though .

Okay, it's been a while since I got a look at Cruiser stuff in the garage. Dune season started and of course the 1st trip prep took my attention away. Then I spent the next few weeks completing "operation cracked buggy chassis" before the next trip. Pic below shows just some of the cracks and added reinforcement and gussets to prevent further problems. Back end had a few too.

So, back at the Orion assembly.

Next pic is the loctite stuff I picked up to seat the bearing race in my worn nose cone.

Then I got my double P-brake seal mod finished up.

Next I removed and replaced old worn speedi sleeves on the P-brake drum and front output flange. For future search content the speedi sleeve numbers I used were 99147 for front flange and 99177 for P-brake. Got a great deal on the from Amazon too. Amazing what you can buy there these days.

Great to see a little progress, wish I had some to report on mine, but we are in full on moving mode. I just hope that I can get all my stuff bolted together enough to haul it all up to Washington State in a couple months.

Appreciate the comment. Although my work was not so good on day 2 last weekend. I managed to abuse two tapered roller bearing races pretty good while trying to back off pre load on the Orion.

I knew better than to bang on it the way I did, but I did it.
Sometimes it pays to just walk away.

Now waiting on two new bearings from AA...........

Minor update, got the Orion pre load dialed in finally. Had to buy a new torque wrench to get it right. Mechanic tip: Don't trust cheap tools

And,

Some new to me short hubs came from the postman . Not the pair I bid on in the ebay picture, very greasy nasty, but seem to work fine. Who has seal kits for these?

My long Aisins will be going away now. (at least after I procure some Longfields with the right outers)

In update news: Finally some real progress on the Orion with a full uninterrupted day in the garage. After many fits and starts with gear end play and bearing pre load fun, put some covers on and its ready to go in.

Finally! After what seemed no end of interruptions on Orion work, got the x-fer case in for mock up again. Man is that thing brick compared to stock! Had to get creative to manhandle it solo. I've got a perfectly able bodied teenager around here somewhere, but he seems always somewhere else when this stuff happens.

Now on to some actual measurements to see what sort of drive line angle I've managed to create.........

Dang it!

After some careful measuring and fooling around with a CAD model, the figures don't lie. U-joint angle at the pinion is about twice what the max should be. It even looks like it was close to being out of the envelope before I stared shoving the whole works to the center.

A few steps back now. Still better now than later wondering what some new vibration is all about.

Now that I have a big Scout box above the frame rail there really isn't enough room to move it to perfect, but at least back where it was. I may have to consider a new on board air situation too. Moving the compressor would help a lot.

Might re think the decision to use the GM motor mount too....
