Glucosamine treatment for an old warrior

Seems like this thread is all me and my pictures lately. Hopefully I'm not getting too long winded with it. From the view count I guess there's a few out there interested.

I'm still enjoying! Keep up the good work! I just haven't felt like commenting on anything.

I'm not blaming the box location either. At least it's distance from the cross member. I think the major culprit is the notch taken out of the lower flange of the cross member to clear the steering u-joint. That major crack propagates from the corner of that notch directly to the rivet hole.

I think your spot on. All the cracks on my old crossmember started around the hole the PO(I call him Butch R) cut in it w/o any sleeving of the hole, which eventually screwed up the frame horn the box was attached to.

You'd think there would be someone on this site, who has an old trashed frame w/a good crossmember in it.

Got a message back from a nearby keeper of Cruiser parts. He has one that's been PS whacked already. And he may be willing to pull a good one from a frame. I'll have to get a look at the cut one to see if it's usable. I'd hate to have him pull something from a good frame just so I can cut a hole in it.

More to do while waiting for a cross member solution.

Started extending the frame for my SOA spring hangers. In the process, I decided to to get rid of the remaining pieces of the previous hangers on the outside of the frame.

Luckily I managed to not obliterate the frame VIN in the process. One digit has a bit of weld left on it, but it's legible.

I sort of feel the same way about my build thread. Seems I am the only one that posts much there, but the view count keeps climbing.

Nice to hear there's interest in the saga of my old beast.

So to explain the frame extensions a little. I put a question out there in this thread SOA geometry thread With some debate there I'm going with keeping the previously installed shackle hangers and putting the original spring hangers in front. With the springs and some weight on stock springs the eye to eye measurement looked about right with hangers off the front of the frame a little. See the pic below.

Anyone else have an opinion on going this route?

OEM goodies await:D

Sometimes I think the "process" is going to wear me out:p

I'm not worried about the lack of comments, lots of views there. Obviously some out there are curious what crazy or inspired thing I'm up too next.

Hopefully if I'm headed for a bonehead move someone will enlighten me. Otherwise maybe all these pics can help inspire the next guy.

In project news: I'm swinging back toward the Scout PS box now. Finally found a reasonably priced core. Now I can mock it up to see how it could fit into my particular puzzle.

You really cannot go wrong with either. That said, your thread inspired me to inspect my frame.
There are no cracks and I have had my Saginaw for probably 9-10 years.

Hi All:

Wow! NOS Toyota shackles! You are going traditional on us!! :D

What do you think of the cost of these NOS parts? Reasonable, in comparison to what is available on the aftermarket?

BTW - great thread!

Alan

Hi All:

A buddy of mine did that on his FJ40 when doing the SOA swap. Frame extensions up front and using stock fixed-end brackets worked real well.

Alan

Traditional? I guess. I'm no purist obviously. I guess I'm a bit of "if it works don't fix it" type of guy. The stock shackles on my rig have performed flawlessly for nearly 35 years. 17 of those with me beating the crap out of them. I would reuse the ones I have if I had to. One is slightly bent and another has a loose pin. My fixed end pins have some junky threads from being banged into the spring eyes to many times.

I want as short of a shckle as possible so stock is the choice. And, I preferr the OEM design where you can't over tighten the nuts and crush/pinch the spring bushings. Unlike the aftermarket H-bar style.

I've got some old Con-Ferr +1 and +2 versions I've run it the past. :meh: Still collecting dust.

As for cost comparison, I haven't priced the aftermarket H-bar or anti-inversion ones lately. I got a good deal with a local club discount on my OEM stuff. Fair price for what you get IMHO. Comparable to the non Toyota stock replacements. And those I don't know if I would chance, not knowing if probably come from the Xiang Chow province of China or something.

Last weekend was a bust for garage time with Mothers day, band practice and the kids hockey.:p So today I snuck in some Saturday time for a change. Got a new to me, previously modified cross member for the cost of a road trip to Tucson. Thanks AZOKIE! Someone made a mess out of one of the radiator mounts, but I've got spares now. I may not even need them anyway, we'll see. And now I finally got a call back for a Scout PS box core for a reasonable price. I'm picking it up to give that option another look. Would need to find an unmolested cross member for that route. Decisions, decisions.

More frame extension work. Had to fix cracks in the welds on that passenger side support piece.

I picked my stuff up from Tim's today and he said that you had stopped by.

Made a custom SST for locating the spring hangers center distance. Spring pins screwed to a piece of flat stock at just the right spacing. 1070mm from my FSM chassis section. About 42-1/8", which seems to differ slightly from other info I've seen. 42-3/8" was the number given in my original shackle reversal kit. I've read 42-1/2" elsewhere. I'm going with the Toyota numbers.

Yeah! I figured since I was in the area I would at least pay a visit. It had been a while. Your rig was looking lonely out there. glad you got it back home.:bounce:
