Hey so I wanna run 315s or 35s do I need to gear down? I hav a 93 80s lc petrol auto now I hav read that on the petrol auto the gears are 4.6 or sumting and on the manual its 3.5 or sumting but yeh so do I realy need to get them done?

The auto petrol in Aus usually has 4.11's, 4.56 ratio would return the overall gearing but to normal when running 35's.

I understood that 4.56's return the gearing to oem for 33's. 4.88 will return you back to oem for 35's. Sea level and no mountains , you might be ok with 4.11's and 35's, but you will be passed by every big rig on the highway at each hill. I just regard to 4.88's two weeks ago, much better!

I have 315s and stock gears for the past year and its not too bad. On long hills it is a dog but around here I still keep it a 60-70mph(pedal to the metal), don't know about higher elevations though.
I still want a regear to 5.29s or maybe 4.88s for off road purpose.

Thanks fellas well unless I can aford gearing I mite just get 33s (285s) thanks so now should I get a 4,5 or 6in lift I have a 3in on but is saging and I wanna go bigger especialy now wif da low bull bar.

Your gearing is going to be messed up with 285s too. You might as well get the tires you want and sort it out after the fact.:meh:

Anything higher than a standard 3inch lift with 285s will look sorta silly. Not to mention it is not needed.

I would much rather have less lift (3inch) and a better COG. A lower COG will help you a lot more on the trail than one that a few inches higher.

3 inch lift and 35's or even 37's is the sweet spot.
At 4 inch it starts to get messed up as far as stability off road, and on highway handling. I've been there... I wouldn't even think of 6 inch.

If you want to go real mad, 3 inch springs, 2 inch body lift and 39.5's or 42s. of course then you will be running in to a world of driveline issues.

Quite certain this is true for US spec '80s as well.

I don't think this is correct, like Brad.S stated, pretty sure 35's w/4.56's would get you closest to original:

Running a true 35 w/4.88's and a OD ratio* of .753:1 @ 2000 rpm your speed would be 56.7 mph.

Running a true 35 w/4.56's and a OD ratio of .753:1 @ 2000 rpm your speed would be 60.7 mph.

w/stock set up: 31.2's, 4.11's, and same OD ratio @ 2000 rpm speed would be 60.0 mph

* '80s had 3 different OD ratios depending on the year

Im having a bit of trouble under standing this? So r u saying that there wouldnt be much diffrence if I run 35s on my 93 stock gears which im assumeing is 4.11 is this rite or hav I got it all backwards?

You will be fine, unless you live in the mountains
I have been running 35's and the stock 4:10's for over 3 years now
Not an issue, can be a little bit of a dog when I get into the mountains but it comes with the territory
Off road it works fine for me and I wheel my truck pretty hard at times
Put on the 35's and 2.5-4 inches of lift and run it
You could always regear later on down the line if it bothers you that bad
You'll be fine

i live in colorado and have 315s with stock gears and it's fine. because of the lift, i wouldn't want it to be much faster in the mountains. i do have 4.88s on the shelf tho, because i want a little better crawl ratio

Will it be drivable on stock gears and 35's? Yes.
Will it be slower getting up to speed and run at a lower RPM? Yes.
Will it crawl quicker? Yes.
Will it generate more heat in the transmission due to slipping? Yes.
Will you kill a bus full of nuns? No.

It all comes down to what you want your 80 to do. I say bolt them on and then decide if you need gears.

I agree but I heard the busload of nuns thing was a near certainty.:p

I've had 4.88s on the shelf for 5 years, haven't been real motivated to put them in. The rig handles find with stock gears.:meh:

4.88 gears and most 315/75/16 tyres will get geared slightly lower than the stock effective ratio.

The stock 4.10-275/70/16 ratio gets you ~2730 driveshaft RPM at 60mph.

(666 tyre revs per mile x 4.1 =2,730.6)

Most 35s are around 600 revs per mile so that puts you about 2980 driveshaft rpm at 60mph.

(598 tyre revs per mile x 4.88 =2,981.68)

The sweet spot tyre is the new BFG KM2 in 345/75/16. That tyre is 36.4 inches tall with 572 revs per mile.

(572 x 4.88 =2,791 rpm) Damn near as close to the stock combo as you can get.

What would the effect be (or how bad would it be), if you kept the stock gearing and used 345/75/16 ti-yers. Way too slow from a standstill? What rpms would you run at 60mph with that set-up, 2345??
