You guys gonna pull the head and see if you can find some internal problems or culprits I presume? I'm curious as to how the motor now turns over after divorce. Are you planning on taking the trans in for a diagnostic too?

Update:

My vacation is over and so is the big push to get the engine out of the Cruiser and on the engine stand. It has been a fun and frustrating two weeks. I am back to working nights and weekend on the Toyota until fall break . There may be some long weekends in there somewhere too.

But...

There is a change of course with the engine. I was able to find in the ih8mud classifieds a engine and transmission that has 72K original miles on it and it is less than an hour away from me. So, my son and are heading off to get the "new" engine on Friday 7/15. I'm not sure what I am going to do with the engine that we pulled, I am still thinking about it.

A few updates. I bought a 72k mile motor from another ih8hate mud member and my son and I picked it up yesterday.

The old

and the new(er)

My bay is getting a little crowded.
It is time to start putting things back in instead of taking them out.
On that point, I have to take my old 292k transfer case off the old transmission and put it on the 72k transmission. Should I (as I suspect) rebuild and or service the transfer case before I mate it to the transmission and put it back in?

I would rebuild it

There are a few bearings, and gaskets to replace if you want to dig into it. I know that the output shaft support bearing is a dealer only item, and id guess the others are as well but I'm not 100% on that.

Thanks for the tips. I will check the classifieds for the guy in Asheville.

Yes the cylinders still move and there is compression or at least the previous owner says that when he cranked the engine after the gear broke it turned very very slowly (compression). I have turned the crank by hand and the pistons still move freely. I am just kind of freaked out about a 292K motor. Is it cost effective to rebuild such a high milage motor or not? I'm not sure.

I think he's refering to a guy in Lenoir check the Hickory Craigslist Marshall at Trollholes is trying to get the 3FE from him to put into my 80 think he had a low mile 1FZ too.

No forward motion on the cruiser these past two weeks. I have broken down the transfer case and now have to remove the gear from the front output shaft to get to the messed up threaded studs that were damaged when we were pulling the engine. I also broke off the head on one of the two pass through bolts that hold the front and back T-case together. I have been trying for a week to get the broken bold out of the case with out damaging the case. So far no luck. Heat = no good. Torque = no. Weld a bolt on to the broken bold that is left = broken off nut, bolt still stuck. I am not sure what to try next. Tap and helicoil? Oh yeah it been over 100 in the un-air conditioned shop all week too making working kind of trying. New motor and trans ready and waiting to go back in but not until I have the T-case fixed and attached to the trans. Sigh!

Keep welding bolts or nuts on until you can't then if you must drill and tap. If you can use a tig welder. I hope it comes out for you. I've had to weld a nut on a broken bolt over 10 times before it finally heated and cooled enough times to break the corrosion.

Broken bolt: tried saturating with acetone and atf? Then beat on housing near bolt with 24oz brass hammer or dead blow hammer? Let sit overnight, saturate and beat again?

I made a damn of modeling clay around the broken off bolt and filled the "reservoir" that it made with Kroil. I have been hitting the bolt with a hammer every time I pass the case sitting on my bench. My shop has a guy that is a master at getting stuck / sheared off fasteners out. He is the one that has me soaking the bolt in Kroil. I have ordered some Mouse Milk (per his request) and we are going to attack the thing tomorrow. So, first soaked in Kroil for three days, then mouse milk and if that does not work then as he put it "fire and ice" as the last resort. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we get this thing out as this is what is holding me up from getting my engine and transmission back in my Cruiser.

!!IT'S OUT!!!

The bolt put up a good fight but in the end we prevailed.
Now the frustration of trying to get the front and rear seals in the T-case continues. I am still looking for a gear puller to get the gear off the front output shaft. Then I can replace the messed up studs. Then the rear seal and maybe just maybe get the T-case mated to the trans the trans to the engine and the engine back in the truck. After that... a new radiator and heater control valve, start the engine and trouble shooting every thing else that needs work.

The transfer case is well on it way to being put back together. I was able to replace the leaking rear seal yesterday and I got the front output shaft out after buying a 4 gear puller set for HF and "modifying" the arms on the longest puller to fit in the front output case. Now I need to press in the new studs (which I keep leaving at home) press the output shaft back into the case reassemble the gears and reassemble the T-case. Seems like a lot but I am finally making headway so I am happy. Next up getting the whole drive line back together (T-cast to trans, trans to engine) and then back in the truck. Then more time & $$$$.

Nice work. Nothing like a father/son working together. Good luck with the donor transfer.

Finally finished up rebuilding the transfer case and am now waiting for funds to finish up the reinstall. I am starting to feel a bit dejected about this rebuild. I was hoping to be further along by now. Oh well, maybe a little cleaning will help. something to do I guess.

That tcase rebuild is a pain. I'd be fine doing it again, but it's not a road I would like to venture down again unless I had to.

The school where I work is starting back this week so I have been very busy and unable to work on my cruiser much or post much. I did replace the pesky heater hose (PHH) since the engine is out and had to replace the front section of the rear heater lines as we damaged them pulling the engine. My son ( I am quite proud of him for this fix) was able to repair the badly mangles shift linkage where it mounts to the side of the transmission. When the trans was pulled by the PO he/they torqued the crap out of the nut trying to get it off the linkage and twisted the shaft that goes into the side of the transmission so badly that my son had to grind it rectangle again just to get the lever back on. He then drilled the hole and installed the washer and pinned it with the cotter pin. Its in now TIGHTER than when the nut was on it.
