FJ80 was built from 1991 to 1993? and it has the 3FE engine it.
FZJ80 was built from 1993 to 1997 and it the has 1FZ engine it.

The basic difference is that the FJ80 (U.S. 91-92) has the 3FE inline six, and the FZJ (U.S. 93-97) has the 1-FZFE inline 6.

The letter(s) before "J" in Land Cruiser model designation tell you what engine a particular cruiser has. "F" stands for inline-6 gasoline engine, the "Z" in "FZJ" represents the double-overhead cam design of the 1-FZFE, which the 3FE does not have. The J means Land Cruiser.
This is where BJ, HJ, UZJ come from. Different engines all in cruisers. (B and H are diesels, UZ is an overhead cam V-8.)

The numbers before engine designation, ("1" in 1FZFE, "2" in 2F) come from revisions of a particular engine. Example- The 3FE was the third incarnation of the pushrod inline 6 gasoline engine, the 1FZFE the first overhead cam inline 6 gasoline engine.

With the engine change in '93, ABS with rear discs and a full floating rear axle became an option. Electronic Locking differentials were a new option as well.

This should really be an additon to the FAQ.

So that also must mean that:

v = v6 (as in 5vz-fe)
r = inline 4 (as in 22r, 22re, 2rz-fe)

e = fuel injection

but what is the second f for?

of course there was a 4 cylinder inline 4 DOHC Camry engine that was 5s-fe and a v6 Camry/Avalon engine was 1mz-fe

Just a guess but using the 3FE and 1FZFE as examples, I bet the "FE" vs "E" means different type of fuel injection. Multiport vs the TBI of the 3FE.
Just a guess.

I believe the second F means twin cam.

F = twin cam economy/tourque/mileage or sumthin' like that. The angle between the intake and exhaust valves is steep.

G = twin cam hi-po. Much wider angle between the intake/exhaust valve for better flor and hgih RPM HP.

Chassis Designation:
The first "F"/"FZ" designates the engine used
The "J" is the chassis size
The "80" is the generation
(If you look at a '83-'87 Corolla it is an AE-86)

Engine Designation
The first number is the gereration of the engine
the first letter is the engine series (i.e. Honda's B-series vs. H-series)
The second letter (if ablicable) is the version of the engine (i.e. B16*a* vs. b16*c*)
Then there is always a hyphen, or ommited for speed of typing
"F" is the pwerformance of the carboration, G is better than F.
A "Z" = supercharger
A "T" = turbo
"TT" is self explanitory
An "E" is the fuel used (I believe)
(If you look at the Supercharged MR2's engine is is a 4A-GZE)

There is more at club4ag.com, great place to look for any toyota info.

Holy dead thread resurrection, Batman! :D
As far as "J" as chassis size, how does that relate as all Land Cruisers (US/NA anyway) that I am aware of have "J", but some are different sizes. I am not doubting, just curious.

FWIW, according to a book I have called "The Land Cruiser, Special Issue Of 50th Anniversary" published in Japan, the "J" designation was derived directly from the military Jeep (heaven forbid) and is the Toyota moniker for its "Land Cruiser" and represents nothing else. This is a wonderful book with tons of incredible color photos, specs, model comparisons, annual output numbers, engine data etc. Hardbound, 190 pages. Specter part # 403-100. It also spells out every detail of every different engine used in a Cruiser.

Easy, I've owned both. Take the FJ80, subtract 30 seconds to 60 mph then add paranoia about a head gasket and you've got the FZJ80.

LOL, I know, but I felt like you guys needed that little info in here somewhere...

I'm pretty sure it's not the chassis itself because it would change thru the generations (hopefully, Ford take note...) and it probably isn't the Model itself because it would have to change between the Lexus line, and various associations(i.e. Tureno, Levin, Corolla)

Where can i obtain a copy of that wonderful sounding book? Have any more recomendations, particularly one that relate to kicking Jeep ass?

EDIT: Careful, I'm known to kill threads to...
