FRP TOPS

I have a few questions on them. I am looking at importing an HZJ73, and I have seen some vehicles that have "FRP TOP" listed on the options list. I have no idea what that is, and if its an option or if it comes standard. Also is the hinged flip down windsheild apart of the "frp top" or not?

Could someone please enlighten me on this one.

Thank You kindly.

FRP is actually fibre reinforced plastic. Its a fancy term for good old F/Glass.
The hinged windscreen,if you have one,is bolted to the body and held in place at the top with some brakets and nuts/bolts.
Some markets never got a hinged windscreen.
The FRP comes standard and the hinged windscreen is now a fixed job from 98 in all markets I think.
Later models have the FRP painted as the same colour as the body while the earleir ones were all white.

You will like the FRP .Its cool in summer ,low maintenance and it never rusts;)
I recommend you dont drill into it to fit roof racks ect

frp top's are ALL J73 or J74 series with 102"wb.

there are no factory trucks with anything else and the frp top. All the windshields fold down. There are no fixed windshield 73/74's.

There are a few J73/J74 trucks with factory soft tops (ala the red Nevada BJ73 for $49K).

they come into canada in 3 flavors so far, the BJ73 (with 3B diesel), the BJ74 (with 13B-T diesel) and the HZJ73 (with 1HZ diesel).

Hey does the FRP top actually come off? Or is it just a Fiber Glass upper to the metal body?

And has anybody experienced problems with seals or weather-strip on the hinged windshield?

Thank You!

pnce removed they seal right back up but of course the installer needs to pay attention for a proper refit.

They do come off, however they are solidly bolted on. They are also mean't to be quite heavy so maybe a get a couple of mates to lend a hand.

I replaced my windscreen frame due to rust and found that it was generally a hassle free process. Again, a mate or two will help to make things easier.

Just make sure the seals near the top are correctly fitted as they can be a bit fiddly.

I removed my frame without moving the FRP roof, however removing it would undoubtedly make things easier.

I have never taken my FRP top off, and I'm not sure if the previous owner in Japan has either. No problems with any leaks or wind noise though. Most of the BJ74's that I've seen here don't have the half-frame option on the front or rear doors...meaning that if you took off the FRP top, then you would also need to remove the rear doors, or else they will stick up like a parachute.

Ideas I've heard are to: 1) purchase a set of rear doors and make them into half doors for when the top is off, and 2) fabricate a totally specialized door for when the top is off or if you want to retrofit a custom ragtop like Wayne has previously suggested.

i've looked around in aust for the rear doors but found nothing, so i'm cutting down another pair of doors so i can run both soft and hard tops. and i think it's 20 bolts all up that hold it on.
