Has anyone replaced/recovered the headliner in an FRP top? I'm usually pretty good at taking things apart, but I can't figure out how to remove the fasteners holding the metal trim in place. They look like phillips head screws, but they're not and they don't pry off like the typical plastic trim fasteners. TIA

Hello,

The fasteners have two pieces. One is a small plastic countersunk Phillips screw. The other is a sleeve that expands when the screw is in place.

This fastener is also used in the front seats.

Use a small Phillips screwdriver to turn the screw left until it is out. You can use your fingers once the head is out.

Pull out the sleeve once the screw is out.

If I remember correctly, there is an SST for this. Otherwise, a remover from a body repair toolkit will do.

If the screw is mangled, you can try a fastener removal tool. Pry it out. It is not easy and requires multiple attempts.

You can also drill the screw if nothing else works.

Make sure you replace the fasteners.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help.

They get damaged easily, be prepared to have a few munted ones that need replacing. Im failry sure you can get a kit that has multiple versions of them and they would be quite handy for future use.
What are you doing for the replacement? Have you sourced a new one or going custom?

I was hoping the trim pieces held a fiberboard backed headliner in place but that's not the case. The headliner appears to be glued directly to the underside of the top so it's a bigger job than I want to tackle now. I was hoping to recover the existing headliner without removing the FRP.

Hi
Nope, it's glued in, with some insulating foam on the back. Removing requires a lot of scraping.
I have the headliner repair on my list for quite a while, too, but I have trouble to find any nice material.
I'm looking for a light grey vinyl with a thin foam laminated to it. My plan is, to patch the holes in my factory liner and then glue the new one on to the factory one. Any thoughts anybody?
Cheers Ralf

This was the first thing I did with my 74. It sucks and took about 5 hours but doable without removing the roof. Rip off the old headliner and use it to cut a new one. To remove the remaining foam an angle grinder with a wire wheel is the solution that worked best for me. Don’t remove all the foam as there are stripes inside for sound deadening.Make sure to cover everything inside with some plastic as the foam that comes off is very sticky and gets absolutely everywhere. I attached the new headliner with „headliner adhesive” like a spray, two people are necessary. Wear a hat.
