Front AHC shock bushing and cushion replacement (3 Viewers)

Can you elaborate on this?
There's a pinch weld or seam on the body behind the rear tires (looking at them straight on) that runs above the frame rail, you can bend it up with a pry bar and then hammer it back when you're done.

It's a great access point to reach the upper shock hardware.

Getting after this today, wish me luck! My truck is spotless though, zero rust / corrosion.

well dang, turns out the bushing you used are for a normal shock, non AHC. Which, it being a rubber donut, you can make it fit. But, going back into the parts fiche, and translating some kanji symbols, it's 2x different bushings. Top is wider and flatter, bottom has a squared out hole for the shock shaft. Not sure how important it would be, but for the $80 to order from Partsouq, vs the $160 the dealer wants + weeks longer shipping, I just ordered the right ones.... oh well, maybe next weekend then.

these are the actual bushings from the VX with AHC (JDM)

Process has been pretty smooth. All the bushes were toast. Looking forward to some new found plushness. Made a lower bushing press in tool, which worked much better than trying to balance a socket on a knife edge!

At 300k as well. Have you changed out your rear springs?
Springs, yes to Kings with spacers.

Bushings on the rear shocks? No, not yet. But will be cutting a hole in body to access shock top, as you need a breaker bar to remove + torque wrench to re-install properly.

Is there a reason you went with Kings? I have stock weight with no mods. Was debating air bags, but figured the originals lasted this long (no bounce in the back) so may just swap a fresh set in.

We added a bunch of weight, past the oem gvwr, so did want more capacity.

With sway-away torsion bars, the king AHC specific springs, and ironman spacers out back. All pressures are right inline now, and the volume change is still factory original gradiations.

I feel a stiffer rear spring may even be in order, as we slap tail often enough coming through stuff.

With full kit (2x dogs, 2x military sceptre cans of water, 2x cans of fuel, food, recovery gear, etc) about 7400 lbs.

I have a full set (all four corners) of OEM shock bushings and cushions that I bought earlier this year from the dealer for my 06 LX if anyone is looking to buy. Selling my truck soon and won’t get around to this upgrade before selling.

Following this topic with interest I have the intention to replace the bushings as well.

I did my rear AHC bushings and cushions a few weekends ago. I have a decently complete set of tools and cool wrenches. I used these flex head ratchet wrenches, they have one side of the ratcheting head that is elongated and fit perfectly.

Did my fronts up, real easy. Made a little video.

The parts listed the OP showed, are not correct, they are for traditional shocks, smaller and narrower.

Double check your own VIN for correct parts, and the non-reusable pieces such as the o-ring + back up ring + top not were not replaced by OP either.

Good inspiration to tackle the job, not the best advice.

@Travis Bickle and @harshjay - when you remove the AHC hydraulic line from the top of the front shock, is there an o-ring or anything to replace in there as far a seal for the oil line? I'm looking at replacing the lower bushing (at a minimum) and want to be sure I have all the parts before teardown.

Thanks!

You bet! There is an o-ring within the female fitting, and a back up ring that sit on the post.

If you go to the specific service manual section recerenced earlier in this thread, the first page will show the ‘non-reuse-able’ parts referenced.

Getting them from your local uncle T, is likely a long wait, and ridiculously priced, so make sure to hit up Partsouq with your VIN

Lol..

2.5 years/30k miles later and everything is fine, kudos to you though.

And I still haven't done it :)

Great video, I'm thinking about replacing the bushings, fluids (and potentially globes/sensors). I have a few questions, if anyone would be able to assist?
  • Can you fit the bushing in the shock with normal hand tools, or do you really need a press for that?
  • What is the "duct tape trick" described in the video?
  • Is the process the same for all four sides? I'm assuming it is but want to confirm
Parts list I'm working with (hopefully McGeorge Toyota comes back online soon)
Beyond that I'll still need the hydraulic fluid, globes, and sensors. More research to be done here.
