So I’m tearing down my axle and I got to this bolt. All the things I’ve seen have had it come off by hand, but I’m having so much trouble with it. I have some big pliers that won’t get it off, I’ve hit it with a hammer, sprayed WD40, socket won’t fit on because of driveshaft. Any ideas? I’m stumped.

Skip using the correct tool as thats already mangled. Get a narrow chisel and a hammer. Use the chisel on the flats to drive it off. Looks like someone before used that method to tighten it.

Replace those nuts, star washers, and claw washers.

That's a nut, not a bolt, and there should be 2 of them. And the chisel and hammer method mentioned above will probably be necessary to back it off. Judging by the deep notches in yours it was pounded on pretty tight

Yea the first one wasn’t bad to get off. It was just the second one. I mis spoke, but I think I got the point across. Gonna have to order a new one of those at some point

Sheesh that axle oil smells bad. The bucket I used to collect it has stunk up my garage and my parents are NOT happy lol. Oh well. They still told me they would rather I keep my stuff inside the garage than outside even though it stinks

Local cruiser club came over and helped me reassemble the knuckle and the rebuild and everything. There were two cops that came up and looked interested. Cops were everywhere because there was a manhunt going on in my neighborhood lol, but they were cool. One cop had just done a knuckle job on a jimny, and the other had a 1975 FJ40 that he was doing a head gasket job on. Now, I just have to assemble the engine parts. The truck is getting further and further more roadworthy! I learned a lot today. Thanks Olde North State Cruisers

Front right spins easy but has a metallic dragging sound. Front left spins, but it’s hard to spin, and it smokes a little when I spin it….probably still hot from when it was on fire earlier. We used a fire extinguisher on it. I don’t think the hubs have much play in them, if any at all

What does that mean? What do I need to do or order?

Edit:just kidding. The smoke was the fire extinguisher powder
Smoking gun----

Work is being done, the engine is giving me a headache. Fuel system isn’t completely sealed, so I am working with my dads friend from Afghanistan to try and solve the issue. He is a mechanic from Afghanistan who arrived here in 2020, and while he was in Afghanistan, he worked for the CIA to fix and maintain their vehicles. He’s worked on old diesel Toyotas for all his life (literally, he skipped all schooling to learn to be a mechanic) and now he is here, just the next neighborhood over helping me fix it whenever he is off work.

Here is a video from a while ago

Having it at the old mechanic really screwed me because while they installed the rebuilt engine, they also lost a LOT of my parts, and noob me didn’t even know what parts I needed, let alone what parts I was missing. Having him help is great, and I’m learning a lot, but his schedule is really inconsistent and it feels like I’m on a forever road with a forever broken truck. I’m trying to stay hopeful with it. Hopefully I can get it driving by summer at least

Just got a call back from the mechanic helping me. He said the part he needed just arrived, and he is waiting on a friend to help him machine another part, but he says that’s the only parts preventing the engine from starting. Hopefully it can get up and running pretty soon. This is the closest I’ve been to a fully functioning 40.
