After 30 years of aching and moaning, I finally secured my own FJ40 and I'm all sorts of stoked. Bought from All Terrain Motorsports in Woodstock, GA and trailered her back to her forever home in Charleston, SC.

1971 FJ40
Overall - In my view, she's an absolute beauty for a 50yo FJ that was likely used as a hunting wagon on some giant ranch in Texas. She's got a Chevy 350 that runs and sounds super solid (behold, the power!). A little rust overall, but very, very little compared to pretty much every other non-restored FJ I've come across.

Main issue is she seems to be stuck in low gear. Transfer knob (I'm sure I'm calling that wrong) that should facilitate the switch from 2wd to 4wd only works in one position. Essentially in neutral (no gears) in what I believe to be the high gear. She's a good and smooth ride, but I'm close to 5k RPM by the time I'm at 40mph. Open to insight on this one.

Upfront... I'm no purist on this one. She's already got Chevy parts and that sweet Camo paint job so no need to pretend I'm getting her back to factory specs. No highway use planned, just want to make her a reliable daily driver that my wife, four kids and me can enjoy whenever the need presents, whether to the shop or the beach.

A few specifics, in no um... specific order:

Paint - Perfectly patina'd Duck Camo. This is my favorite part!
Engine - Aforementioned Chevy 350.
Transmission - Believed to be original 3-speed. Shifts fine… but seems stuck in Low
Exterior - Light rust here and there, but nothing of major concern.
Frame - Barely a spot of rust that I've seen! Whooo!
Interior - Decent, but will take some cleaning and a few fresh stitches
Dash - Pretty much nothing works (except that cool little map light on the passenger side). Tach works, but no speedo. Haven't checked the odometer, but hey... let's not kid ourselves.
Glass - All in good shape. Haven't checked out seals.
Roof - Lip/rim is degraded on passenger side, there's a busted vent attached to the top and she needs a fresh headliner. Strong candidate for replacement.
Seats - Driver side seat needs replaced but nearly all else in solid shape
A/C - Present.
Heater - I think so.
Radio - Yeah, right.
Floor - Solid, all around. Not a single soft spot that I’ve found (so far).
Lights - This thing could brighten up a small city there are so many lights.
Battery - New, but she was dang near dead after 5 minutes with those lights on and the motor off.
Doors - Solid, but could use a good cleaning and new seals.
Windows - They go up, they go down. No issues.
Wheels - Oversize, brand new tread, chrome rims. Would like to add a couple inches of lift and paint the wheels white (or swap for white). Spare matches the other four.
Winch - There is a wench. Doesn't appear to be connected.
Bumpers - Heaven help the poor soul who runs into these things. Like they welded a brick house onto the front and back of a brick house.

Doesn't look like a bad starting point. One thing would is remove the second reverse light that is mounted to the hard top. Looks to be the one year only 73 reverse light. Sure someone would buy that from you or it will bolt up where the current one is mounted.

Thanks!

If you mean that light to the left and slightly above the plate, that's not even hooked up. Could easily remove, though I'm guessing it was less of a reverse light and more of a spotlight for hunting use. Definitely no need to keep since the goal is to streamline.

Cool 40, love the camo!

Picture of the wench. I see a winch on the front. Where you hiding the wench. Guess if your married you would not want her to know.
They get to take turns. Got a couple doggers to fit in there too!

Originally these held seven. My 68 held that many. Even had a Smittybuilt roll bar and kit to keep the jump seats. Kids grew up and installed 73-78 seats front and back. So now down to holding four.

Assuming there’s a boot sealing the transfer case lever, remove it and try swinging the lever. Since ‘71 did not come with a floorshift lever, it’s possible that when it was installed they didn’t trim back enough sheetmetal for a full range of motion.

Wait! You have children?😛

Has a separate thread on the issue. Not 100% sure if he has a original under the dash transfer shifter or a replacement floor shift.

I even had grandkids. One old enough could have a great grand child in a few years. Damn I'm old.

Yes, there is a monster of a wench on there! (wifey seems okay with it)

Sidenote: I'm such a noob... dying to ask the forum how all this stuff works and runs, but doing my best not to demonstrate the full extent of my noobness.

Don’t worry about it. I’ve been here 16 years and I still suck at doing any advanced kinds of searches. Luckily for me, most of the tech I need was uploaded to my brain long before this forum existed.

All that’s really expected of a noob is to ‘play nice’, post links to a few of the threads you searched on your own (to prove you’re trying) and post pics (this crowd loves pics!) Reminds me of a punchline from one of Jim Croce’s comedy routines (yes,he was also a standup comic before he became famous as a musician): Half of the Army reads comic books; the other half just look at the pictures!😛

Since nobody has noted:

Your wife may be a wench, but that gizmo on the front of your truck is a winch.

And why would you get rid of the only backup light you have? It came with the truck. At some point you'll want that to work.

Congrats on the acquisition.

Wife is definitely not a winch or a wench. She let me get away with this, didn't she?

Also not sure how me getting rid of that light came up. Ain't getting rid of nothing anytime soon. Hell, first gotta figure out what works.

Problem with the gearing has been solved!!!! (for now, at least).

Two things:
  1. Just as one of you suggested, the 4D knob was impeding movement of the shifter.
  2. Buddy got up underneath and was able to manually engage high gear.
To all those who have been helpful, cool, and welcoming, thanks very much! Stoked about this thing even more now that she'll run faster than 30mph!

The reverse light in question is the one on the hard top. The one on the tub is still there.

This was just in fun. This one is pretty common to see on mud. I remember wrimting shinny when I meant skinny before. One letter changes the complete meaning. My excuse is the English is my second language. Problem is I still haven't figured out what my first language is.
