My recently acquired FJ60 (340k) suddenly won't start. Won't crank. Won't even click. Turn the key on, have power, turn to start...nothing. Tried jumping, no luck. Was previously making that low rah-rah-rah sound when cranking indicating either a dying battery or starter.

After some research here and elsewhere I'm thinking the starter has died? Is that where I should start?

Thanks for any help!

Hit the starter with a broom stick while someone turns the key repeatedly.

Make sure it’s in neutral.

Lights, radio, anything electrical still work?

HemiAlex for the win! I hit the starter with a broomstick and it cranked and started right up. Guess I need to get a new starter.

Thank you for the help!

If it's a Denso alternator starter pull it out and rebuild it.

If you do get a new one, get a denso gear reduction if available, so much better in my 80 pickup! I'm a convert!

Where would I get one?

I installed this on my ‘86. It’s perfect. Toyota remanufacured.

Looks like I’m putting in a starter soon. What does the gear reduction do? Where would I get one?
It just changes torque via gears and turns the motor over better.
