I posted this question on an old thread I found, but want to put it out there so it is more visible...

I just got a lead on a pair of 60 axles in good shape for 1100 out the door. I don't want to pass on them, but do not have the welding chops to do a bunch of custom fab work. I'm a newbie, so forgive the question if it is obvious to everyone but me... Do these "bolt right in" on a 68 FJ40 or is there fab involved to mount them, connect the leafs, shocks? Will I need custom length drive shafts? Are the axles still 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern?

No, they do not bolt on. U will have to outboard your leafspring hangars. Also the drive shaft will not bolt on. The wheels are 6 on 5.5, but they are disk brakes and without the required offset the rims may not work

Ok, that's what I figured. I really want to ditch my 10-splines! If you had to guess, what do you think the cost would be (ballpark ranges) to have someone fab them in? Like, how much would you charge if you were in the business?

Thanks for the reply and info A10!

If you are just trying to get rid of the 10 splines, there are far easier ways to go. You could just replace the axles, spider gears and hubs. If you want disks brakes as well the faq''s have many options for that as well.

That price seems high to me. Research the FAQs on disk brake upgrades. You can do better and not have to fab anything.

"I just got a lead on a pair of 60 axles in good shape for $1100 out the door."

on top of what others have said above,
what is good shape?
you need better leads.
that isn't a great deal.

1100 is steep, 500 would be a good deal for both. For fab it depends how much prep you do. For no prep it would take me about 15 to 20 hours to remove old suspension and install new with a kit to out board all the hangars

So you guys are saying that front and rear axles, no rust, fresh rebuilds, disc brakes for 1100 TOTAL (that's two axles for 1100) is a bad deal? You think i can get two axles for 500???

$1100 is high for a set of used axles.

Now if every bearing has been gone through and the axles are completely rebuilt then it may be another story..

$500 is a good deal 1100 is too much
Find FJ62 Axels 4:11 gears and gusseted front.

About 20-30 hrs for a complete swap with outbording.

Yeah these have been completely rebuilt, have 411's and rear sway bar setup. Now I'm going to look around a bit more though... ya'll freaked me out! o_O

Thanks for all the input folks!

People keep saying "axles" but I get the feeling everyone is actually talking about complete housings. axles, and gearsets. Am I misreading this thread? Has the terminology on this sort of thing passed me by?

Hi Doug. That's my bad. I have a tendency to toss general terms around thinking that I am being very clear... I mean full assemblies, not just axles (shafts). So $1100 for BOTH front and rear rebuilt, cleaned FJ60 complete from disc to disc and sway bar setup on the rear.

That price doesn't seem outrageous to me for the full assemblies in really good shape. That's what my '79 has on it (plus the H55 tranny). I have about an inch extra stick-out on the rear tires. I love the 3.70 ratio and the fact that the truck runs much quieter with the fj60 parts. The parking brake works really well, and there is only one brake cylinder to deal with on each rear brake assembly rather than the two on a standard 40. Glad to hear that the terminology has not changed too much for me to understand your point.

Good chance a 68 will have the ball and claw in the knuckles not a Birfield. That would mean a bronze bushing not a seal at the end of the axle housing. Those have been converted to disc but not as easy and the axle with Birfield in the knuckle.
