My 84 FJ60 ac started to whine not loudly but noticeably, and as it whined the AC got warmer and warmer. Finally I decided to put in some R-134 into the system where I noticed some bubbles coming out of the front compressor body seal. I ordered up a cheapo kit from autozone (didn't have all the gaskets i needed, but i managed) and threw it back together. When the AC compressor was apart I noticed some surface rust on all the parts under 88321A, 88321C, 88321B(small and large reed) on the picture below however no rust on the underside of the valves. I went ahead and put the compressor back together, checked that it held a vacuum and recharged it. When I put in more R-134 into the system, the AC clutch Immediately kicked in, usually it takes about 3/4's of the first can before that happens. I added 2 small r-134 cans and still blows hot. and it's making a new funny but faint ticking noise.

Things to note.
When i "evacuated" the system there was what seemed to be a considerable amount of refrigerant left in the system. I think that the compressor seal failed when I added more R-134 because it already was full and i overcharged the system.
If this matters i used R-134, not R-134A.
There was oil in the compressor and I added more afterwards. there was no scoring on the cylinder walls.

I think that the failure is due to the corrosion, I left the AC sitting open and exposed while i rebuilt my engine, it worked fine at first but no longer. Just want some feedback to be sure that I'm right and that this corrosion could in fact cause the failure.

Update. just drove it home, the clutch was halfway engaging and making a gnarly hissing noise. I turned the ac on to make it fully engage which it did. Then when i turned off the Ac the clutch did not disconnect. Theres also some very obvious hissing leaks all over this thing. I just had replaced the seals. What am I missing here... other than a bad cluch, could a clutch be the reason for failure? The groaning i heard was the clutch slipping? And i could have just put the seals in wrong????
 
Is there no hope for mine? Id rather not spend 250+ dollhairs on this if i can fix it myself
 
So when i disconnected the high and low oressure hoses, it had to drain once for the low pressure, and again for the high pressure.... shouldnt it be the same pressure on both sides of the hoses? Or atlesst seep one side to the other??
 
I fugured it out i think. I didnt put the clutch spacers back on so thats why my clutch was half grabbing. And i think its a bad expansion valve. Anyone with experience in AC please feel free to give some input. im gonna start my dash teardown soon and would like to know what to look out for
 
Definitely need those shims, the air gap between pulley and hub should be roughly .020". Do you know what the high and low pressures are in the system is when it's operating and the clutch is engaged? If your expansion valve is at fault, the pressure readings will help with the diagnosis.
 
You are fighting a lot of variables at the same time. I would buy a new compressor, evacuate the system, add 'some' oil (guessing at what might be left in the system), evacuate for a long time (30 min +) and then recharge the system, watching the low and high side pressures. Pay attention to the refrigerant amount specified on the label on the cowl and don't add too much.
 
I didn't take note of the pressures when it was on... I went ahead and put in a new expansion valve, next on the list is a drier. and I'm going to put some seals back on the compressore once more with the shims this time! and try it again when I get the funds for it.
