Do you really want a "stereo"?

I would install an iPod or iPhone that you can easily take with you.

I mounted a marine amp in the toolbox, an in-line volume control and one of these cables...

That's what I did too, I actually removed a PO stereo installation to clean up the wiring and dash.

Amplifier under the seat, speakers clamped to my roll cage, tiny micro plug for my ipod lives between the Tuffy console and the seat until I plug the ipod in.

I use a wireless Bluetooth speaker. It connects to my iPhone in my pocket. It plenty loud even with the top off going down the road. Plus it's simple and easy. No wires no install.

A week or so ago I watched a show on how all this digital music has come at a cost. The high and low have been trimmed off to make them take up less roam when compressed so more songs can be stored. When driving probably not that big a deal. For years my sound system in the FJ40 was what was used when camping. I had higher quality speakers that weren't attached and kept protected while driving then placed on the back sill. Sound is one of the senses I used while driving. Having a sound system so loud that drowns out the vehicle noise is something I don't do. Hard enough to hear a siren over the vehicle noise without a audio system louder than that. I also never use head phones for the same reason.

in my '72, the stereo was mounted under the bench - barely visible - amplifier in the tool box, two speakers off the roll bar and two box speakers on the rear wheel wells

to the original poster: it would help if you had the year of your cruiser and some characteristics in your signature line, so that we know what configuration you have, for example of seats and dash
Can you provide pics of your set up? I too have a ‘72 dong know where to start

which particular aspect: the stereo under the bench, the speakers, or the amplifier ?

not all of which are installed right now since it came back from the Spa: the DSRTRDR is getting some TLC . . .

Anybody ever ran one of the new style sound bars in a 40? Like what guys are running in the UTV's? (not the roll bar mount.) And just bluetoothing from a phone... Wet Sounds Stealth, seems to be the big brand I'm seeing.. But can't find any actual install pics.
But good God, they're proud of them... $$$$.

Also random question, anybody ever ran a cargo net tailgate? Can't seem to find anything that would fit the 40..

Wow those are expensive! And you will not get much bass out of that so would need to add a subwoofer, driving the cost up. Could mount it on the roll bar behind your head which is okay for some, but I prefer the music to be in front of me.

I just finished installing my 6x9 speakers at the rear of my 1982 FJ40. For me the best location was on the ceiling. I did some carpentry work and that is the result....very cheap and in my opinion good solution. Hope it helps. I used some old ply wood I had....
