Hello, I am a "new" FJ40 owner and have been a member of mud for a little while now, even before my "new" acquisition... I have been reading as many posts here as I can to learn more and more about my new retirement toy... However, I have not been able to find anything on suggestions of stereo installs etc.

I hope this is appropriate here, but what I am looking for is photo's of dashes, radio installs as well as speakers etc.

I believe I would fall into the purist category as I like the cruiser the way it is and will not cut my dash to accommodate a stereo etc. I have seen some overhead consoles for radios and CB's but do not know who the makers are and where to get them etc. I know SOR has a shelf for the roof area but it does not look like it would accommodate a stereo install. I am not sure about speaker installs either. I know the "diehards" would not even cut holes into the door panels, but mine were installed before I got it, so I will leave it until I get around to my refurbishment process.....

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... My local Audio Express does "custom" work, but I am not sure how expensive it will be, but I spoke to the installer the other day about my thoughts about and overhead console which would accommodate a 2din bay for a radio unit with navigation built into it etc... I would also like to consider locations for CB or even a ham radio install etc. So, Please share your thoughts and photos.....

Thanks in advance!!!

Tuffy boxes have a place toward the front of the box where the stereo mounts almost vertically. I mounted my 6x9 speaker boxes at the rear on the inner fenders and held them to the rollbar with bungee cords.

Do you really want a "stereo"?

I would install an iPod or iPhone that you can easily take with you.

That's what I did too, I actually removed a PO stereo installation to clean up the wiring and dash.

Amplifier under the seat, speakers clamped to my roll cage, tiny micro plug for my ipod lives between the Tuffy console and the seat until I plug the ipod in.

Thanks for the information here... I am not sure now what I want to do... I thought I wanted a stereo and the ideas of the Bluetooth and wireless speakerss etc are great ideas I never thought of. I do not have the Tuffybox as of yet, but that is an option I overlooked. My cruiser is completely stock with a simple console between the seats. I bought it from a fellow mudder in Texas. Just enjoying it right now driving it as much as I can... My FM/AM radio is not really cutting it though... I just repaired my front speakers of which I only had one working but now have two... Much better sound, but was thinking I wanted more... Love the ideas here and will now have to figure out my best option.

I thought I actually want to try and get a 2 bin radio installed somehow with Navigation built into it etc for use offroading etc... That was my original thinking... I was not sure if anyone had fabricated anything to incorporate something like that into their rigs... But I have some other more simple ideas to consider now.....

There's a thread on here where someone reworked a Tuffy for a double din head unit. I liked it so much I saved the pictures.

Stereo options

Here is an option to keep the stereo out of sight, (a CD player & two 6-1/2" speakers).
All was mounted without drilling any new holes.
The CD player is in top of the glove box, one speaker is vertical next to the driver's seat, the other is stuffed up an angle in the top passenger side of the cowl.

Yes it is a bit of a pain to change stations from the driver's seat and there is a lot of opening & closing of the "pocket" door.
The reach to change stations is not too bad but not the safest maneuver in traffic.
The location leaves plenty of room in the glove box for other stuff.
If you have a center console, it is probably a better option to put the controls closer to the driver.

This required fabricating 3 sheet metal brackets.
The CD player bracket is bolted to the exposed ends of the pass side hood hinge screws.
Cowl speaker mount shares bolts with the w/s hinge, blower & heater duct.
Seat speaker mount shares seat frame bolts and one threaded hole in the floor pan.

I bought one of those pods for mounting a head unit in the glove box but my head unit didn't have a remote so I sold it. It seems like kind of a pain to ride around with the glove box open, not mention losing the space.

alex,
why does that blitz iphone UI cost $80. what are the "features" besides the obvious? thanks. trying to figure out a stereo solution myself that was already going to include marine amp, wakeboard speaker pods and an ipod touch.

That is my set up too. I got the tuffy and stereo on Mud for cheap and the speakers on TuT for free. The stereo has usb and 3.5mm inputs so it works well.
I have a set of the aluminum kick panel speaker mounts but did not install them as I do not care for how they cover the "a/c" vents a bit. I used wide velcro to hold the 6x9s in place.

I'm not sure. Is there another plug and play option for an iPod/iPhone?

i think yours has an A/D converter in that cube.

The output of the cube is analog, so no reason to have an Analog-to-Digital converter in there.

Looks to me like a fancy cable that attaches to the battery so it still charges the ipod when the ignition is switched off.

It also seems to me that if you got a 12v cigarette lighter to USB plug and plugged the ebay cable into a hot 12v it would work exactly the same.

correct, but the input to the cube, the 30 pin, is capable of carrying both analog and digital audio into the cube. as it is an active device, for $80, i would at least hope there is a buffer or line driver in there of some sort. i guess i meant digital to analog.

I really like this option.it looks like that tuffy box was made in the 2 din variant...? I like that option for security alone... I will have to search for that thread to see if it says where he got it... I figured someone had done it.....

im pretty sure he made it and he put a lot of work into it. i read that thread a couple months ago. so maybe brush the dust off your TIG welder ;)

He did make it.

I can't understand why Tuffy wouldn't offer this. Maybe it's too long to fit with a rear heater?
