Thought it might help some folks if they are looking for a suitable after-market horn for 78 or later 40s, 55s, and I believe 60 series. Stumbled on these hanging on a rack at AutoZone. They are made in Italy and cost about $16. A plug and play install on the 40...just slightly smaller in diameter and the sound is very much like the original. Here's some pics....Toyota horn is on the left.

(These will also work on pre 78s as there is a ground jumper wire included to ground the horn to the chassis.)

Personally, I prefer the Hella horns. They are a direct replacement and are loud and will get someone's attention. They do cost more ($60-75), but I think their sound quality, reliability and 118 db output are worth it. I have them hooked direct with the existing wiring without the relay setup and they have worked for over 8 years.

I'm going to dig this thread back up - are there any options for Pre-78 40's? What is the difference between 78+ and prior? I know my 75 has a horn relay, do the older horns run at a lower voltage than 12V?

@caz - did you go with the Hellas or the Blazer's listed at the top? Did you still run it through the stock horn relay?

Hella on the 75 and 87.

Brian - any wiring changes for the hella, or just a spade connector there, as well? It looks like an actual "PLUG" on the image above...

@brian - that would be awesome, if you remember. Thanks!

@Bambi Girl - how's the tone and volume on those? I've been looking at them, but I was after something a bit louder than the stock Toyota.

Thanks all - my truck has a single Ford horn bolted to the inner fender. Did land cruisers have a high/low tone horn setup, or were both the same tone?
