ok so i started cleaning up the front axle, is this pitting too much for a rig thats gonna see mud frequently and is predominantly used off road? im worried that the seals aren't gonna do their jobs. new front axle time?

The first wipe will fill the pits with grease and it will work fine. You might smooth it down a bit with a light flap disk, or not. If you take off too much material, you could mess it up.

RE: Rivets

I just removed the bumper on my FJ60 and used a sawzall to cut the heads off. Then I used a combination of a cold chisel between the remaining bracket and frame and a punch to beat the cut off portion out of the hole. I tried the sawzall because I don'l like grinding all that much, and it worked well.

Nice work mate, you been ripping in to that 60. Were the rear brakes toast? I put new shoes and wheelbearings in that 6 months before you got it

Good luck with the project

hey paul

a lot of the brake components were in bad shape but i used the shoes. gonna need new discs up front. all the bearings are being replaced. the project is on hold for a bit since i just started 12hr shifts at work, but i'm 3rd year now so i should be able to afford a locker in a few more weeks, once i get some 4 day weekends that aren't busy it will get moving quickly. also waiting on tool allowance so i can go buy a mig, the old stick just isn't cutting it any more.

this weather is ridiculous, the body i'm using is stuck out at a mates farm with no way to get to it. how is it going up there with the floods? you guys staying dry?

Yeah dry, all good. My 40 series (yes I bought one too) is out in the rain. My 80 winch truck is out at Gracemere and I can't get to it.

But life could be worse!

I did the rear up because it was all shot, but never got round to the front

I know you want to do this cheap as possible, but I seriously would be doing a rear disc conversion.

There are 2 ways -

1 is to use hilux front rotors and Subaru brumby front calipers with built in handbrake, mounted on custom brackets

2 is to use early 80 series backing plates, rotors and calipers, with a little rework and custom brakets. This is how I am going to do the ones on Perkos 60 ( with my old cab)

well i wouldn't call mine a 40 but meh. brakes are all fixed, cost about $100 to do. they will do for passing roadworthy. i will upgrade them when i realise how bad they are.

hijacking my own thread do you have any interior trim pieces from that 80 you dont want?

Yeah mate, complete gxl interior including elect windows, door trims, arm rests, console, 7 seats, carpet. It's all coming out

I was gonna put it all on evilBay but if you want it (or something) let me know

Paul

Lol, looks like we are on the same track then, I paid $150 for mine. Gonna try to stick it on a shortened 80 series chassis and 37s or 38s a-la mr Ipor's fine example.

in the interim I am gonna require updates of your progress, post up some more pics

that ipor forty is the shiz... updates are a joke. give me another few weeks i'll be back into it. gotta get an oxy set from somewhere tho cos frame rivets are still a pain in the arse.

I grind the head off with a 4" or 5" angle grinder then either bash the bracket off with a sledgehammer or centre punch and drill out the rivet.
Never had much success with oxy, just made a ugly mess and spent hours grinding anyway.

However, you might be more proficient than I.

Couple of questions, How much longer is the 60 series chassis? Have you thought about extending the body?

Paul

Edit: sorry, you talked about lengthening the body in the first post, Doh!

i spend a lot of time behind an oxy torch. apparently apprentices get the s*** jobs. just spent coin on parts so there will be progress soon (those discs look like crap). what do you think about sticking the lsd in the front with the clutch pack shimmed up? since this will be used mainly offroad with the 2wd mod done i figured it might last for a while and provide some fun till i get locked in the front.

If you are going the auto locker route I would prob put it in the front. 2 reasons - you only need to pull the knuckles apart once. - the auto locker will tend to clunk and grab a bit in the rear, a LSD will be a lot softer to drive. The effect of the locker can be overcome with modified driving style, and a LSD will work ok in the front. It comes down to personal preference.

made some progress recently, finally got all the parts needed for the front axle to go together. finally got my hands on an oxy set again and cut off anything riveted to the frame that i didn't want, also managed to remove the fj40 body from it's frame. if i have time tomorrow i'll try get the diff center back together and into the front axle.

when the front axle is done and bolted back in place i'll start trial fitting the body and working out where body mounts are going, how the steering wheel will fit and where i'm gonna put a fuel tank.

also ordering a whole ton of gear from metal tech when they get back to me with a shipping quote. hopefully i get that in the next 24hrs and i can have sweet tubing here soon.

i was thinkin of extending the body but i am looking at a metaltech cage for it. i also like the idea of having a small tray for keeping the dirty stuff in like recovery gear, that and i'd like to be able fit a factory hard top. front diff is getting set up this week.

we need to organise to swap interiors and everything for the 80's too paul. you been busy?

edit: i have been thinkin of doing something like this to keep the original lines. https://forum.ih8mud.com/hardcore-corner/468384-new-bed-45-a.html

made a heap of progress in one day today.

got my axle sandblasted this morning and por15 on the knuckles, rest is getting satin black spraypaint. got my diff center back, the guy at the shop said it's worn strange and will whine at high speeds but its for the front end so it wont matter. also stripped out the locking hubs cleaned them and replaced the quadrings in them. back to work tomorrow and then 2 weeks holidays after that but next update should be the front end back together and locker in the rear and ready to putt around the back yard tearing up the lawn. just gotta dodgy up some controls :D:bounce:
