Thanks for looking into this @Brian/99uzj100. Much appreciated. I’ve ordered many variations of thermo snap switches ranging from 70 degrees Celsius up to 85. Based on the “caution” statement, it looks like 80 degrees Celsius is the spec for the 1976/77 California spec carb cooling fan stock switch.

Made my own carb cooling fan snap switch and bracket.

What components are you using?

I have the fan but am curious about your snap switch

I will take a guess, it's been years since I worked on mine. What I found at the end to get it working was several components in the timer assembly had several cold solder joints. Anyhow the snap switch is like a thermistor, the timer will go to ground once the threshold is met (manifold gets hot, 85*C, you can the it on the snap switch) and the key goes to off position to set the timer motion to get the fan to come on.

Providing some additional details for those wanting to make their own. First, there are different fan controllers over the years. The early controller (1976/77); where the fan was located in the front of the truck. This controller is pretty simple. It uses a snap thermo switch. This set up will also work with the side mounted fan.

The snap switches are readily available. Look for the ceramic stainless steel version. You want the version that is NO (normally open). They come in different temp ranges 70/80/85+ degrees Celsius. When circuit closes it sends power to the timer controller to activate the fan.

The later year controllers use a different thermo sensor as shown.

Here is a video. I retrofitted this fan set-up for my 1976 FJ40. I made a small sub harness that connected to the early fan controller. I was able to use wiring IGN and GROUND wires from the unused emissions computer to easily connect the wires to controller and mounted it on drivers side firewall.

AckCruiser,

I’m trying to install my carb cooling fan setup but the PO removed all the needed wiring in his new harness he installed.

I have a good fan, computer , and sensor. I just need to know on the computer what is plugged where… it looks like 3 separate plugs. Also do you know where to locate or what the type of connectors are needed to properly plug into the computer.

I also know there is a 5 amp inline fuse that’s wired in as well

Thanks for any guidance

I can get you a pin out. I also have those connectors and terminals. Do you know that controller works? All of the 78s I have seen/had/repaired are broken.

I remembered I posted this video a while back, post 166.

So as stated above, my vehicle was re-wired with a new harness and the PO deleted the carb fan and all its wiring. I have collected the needed carb fan parts and some were included with the vehicle as well.

I got ( with some knowledgeable help from an expert in this thread ) a good idea for the wiring but still have a few unknowns and hope I can get some answers on this thread to get the system hooked up correctly.

1. Operating carb fan tested with 12v

2. Correctly operating CF controller thanks to Enginer8000

3. And a functional Sensor / wiring harness.

I had a 7 pin wiring harness fabricated ( thanks Enginer8000) to plug everything into the CF Computer which included a wiring diagram to help get everything wired up correctly.

I plan on using these type waterproof connectors in place of the factory connectors on the Sensor wire and the Carb Fan wire. ( I have a single connector coming for the sensor wire). From what I’ve read, there is also a 5 amp fuse in between the 12v battery power supply and the CF Computer as well.

So… I think I got everything need to complete the installation of the Carb Fan setup. Now for the wiring and a few unknowns.

1. Green/White wire ( bottom right on plug) goes through the 5amp fuse then to continual 12v battery power supply.

2. Blue/Black wire ( top right on plug) goes to the Temp Sensor wire.

3. Black/Yellow wire ( top 2nd from right on plug) goes to 12v Ignition source

4. Blue/Red wire ( bottom left on plug ) goes to the carb fan positive providing 12v to the carb fan

5. White/Black wire ( top left on plug ) goes to a ground

My unknowns …….

1. Does the carb fan get grounded on the fire wall or fender or some other location ?

2. Does the CF Computer ( White/Black wire) get grounded under the dash on a good ground bolt location ?

Thanks for any guidance

I grounded mine to one of the fan mounting bolts:

My CF controller is from a 1976/77 40. I used the WB ground wire and the Black IGN ON wire from the harness emissions computer connector.

The fan is grounded from the mounting bolts to the firewall bracket.

Thanks for the diagram… I will add for others who may use this. If you are using a 78 or earlier CF controller, then the relay is built into the CF controller. If using a 79 or later CF controller then you will need an M3 relay as shown in the diagram above .
