fj40 carb cooling fan...do you run yours?

mine doesnot have a cooling fan where can i get one

anybody have a picture where it is mounted in the truck . thanks

if yours doesn't have one i wouldn't go out of the way to get one.. thats a lot of wiring/the computer/the sensor/the actual fan if you want it to be all stock (not to mention you'd have to weld on the bracket to the cowling fins to get the fan to mount) - a lot of $$ and work to put something in that probably wont do much for you. if you are having problems a better solution might be an aftermarket fan/manual switch/relay that you can source for cheap

but to answer your question the stock cooling fan for a 78 is attached to a bracket on the drivers side cowling fins (opposite of the heater blower assembly)
 
i do not have the fan but i have some connection wire on the driver side back of the front fender near the fire wall

Interesting information. Mine has the fan, it works, and is hooked to a toggle switch on the dash. I haven't run it yet in warm weather. Bought it last winter and immediately started cleaning it out which led to stripping the bed which led to rebuilding the heater, etc etc etc
I was wondering what conditions to run the fan and whether it was once wired a different way. What is the correct (factory) way this should be wired? Curious about the running after shut-down operation.

It's all wired into this little module under the dash. There's a temp sensor under the manifold that grounds out at a certain temperature point, and activates the fan. The module thingie flips off the fan after a certain point when you turn off the ignition, 20 minures or so. I don't know if that is a temperature thing.

Is your alternator OEM, or a conversion?
 
your stock coolant bottle is in the way..

none of those wires are for a cooling fan

I mentioned that because the fan controller is somehow hooked up to the OEM voltage regulator. If the PO did an internally regulated alternator conversion, your cooling fan might not work as advertised...
 
I have mine hooked up to a switch and can turn on or off when I want. It used to not turn on when I didn't have it hooked up.

I call BS. I have a Mean Green GM Alternator and the fan works the same as it did with the Toyota Alternator.

I had a 76 FJ40 that was California emissions equipped, and it had a carb cooling fan, but it didn't work when I bought it. The 40 would get vapor lock all the time when it got hot. I tried insulating the fuel lines, but that didn't help. It was my daily driver and this was very frustating. I finally wired the fan to a switch on the dash, so I could turn it on when I needed it in the warmer months. This did the trick. I never had vapor lock again.

I now have a 75 FJ55 that does not have a cooling fan. The PO said it used to vapor lock, but he added an electronic fuel pump to fix the problem. It must work, because I've never experienced vapor lock in the 55.

I have a Mean Green and my fan runs exactly the same as it did with the OEM alternator.
 
Mine still works; here in Texas it runs every time I turn the engine off.

x2 on my '82, also in Tejas.

I had hot start issues on my '76 until I fixed the cooling fan. Until then I had to prime the carb with starting fluid when hot.

Anyone know what year the carb cooling fan became a standard feature? Was it the same year as the 2F--'74?

Call it what you want. Mine didn't work out that way. I wired in an aftermarket electric fan controller and all is good.

Are you all still using the external voltage regulator?

No. The Mean Green is a newer GM alternator rated at 200 amps with internal regulation. All it requires is ignition key 12v to turn on.

Look for this on the exhaust mani behind the carb. My fan stopped working so last night I removed this sensor and jumped it. Now the fan comes on and runs for about 20 minutes like it used to. Bad sensor.

78 Non-US destined for the tropics. No cooling fan.
Runs and starts fine independent of temp. My carb has a fuel return and I'm a believer that the return helps keep the fuel in the fuel line cooler.
 
No need to run wires to a switch mounted on your dash. Just simply ground the wire that went to the temp sensor.(I used a wire with an alligator clip on it and clipped it to one of the brake lines. It will turn on after you shut off the truck and run for 20 minutes. I have a really good battery so I'm not worried about that going bad. Then in the winter I just disconnect the clip.
