Any suggestions to pop the brake drums off? Its a 72 and we tapped on them with no luck. Thanks in advance!

Have you backed off the adjusters?

nope! When we tried the adjusters were about 2 to 3 complete rotations from being anywhere near tight! Cruiser sat for years

bigger hammer & a block of wood!

Front or back brake drums?

Get a bigger hammer...and use it.

bigger hammer sounds great, didn't want to go big and regret it as I so often have in the past. Only tried to get fronts off tonight, got too damn cold, will try again in next few days. Thanks for the advice

It is amazing how stubborn the early-style brake drum can be when trying to remove it from the axle flange or wheel-bearing hub....

That was one of the many nice upgrades (along with a parking brake moving from the transfer case to the rear axle that also adjusts the rear brake shoes when used) when Toyota switch rear axle drum brake designs in 08/80. The flange on the brake drum where it seats on the axle flange is threaded so that you can use an 8mmx1.25 pitch thread bolt to force the brake drum off the axle flange.

sometime when I'm plush I will be replacing axles with axles of a 60 with a spring over so I don't want to invest too much time or money on what I have, just getting a little tired of feeling like brakes are over - rated!

Did you remove the set screw (near the wheel studs). Assuming it is still there after all these years.

Seeing that screw always makes me smile... is if the drums needed any help staying on...

screw came right out, not frozen at all!:bang:

The best way I found was use the blue hammer.... Torch on the front where the drum touches the axle. Just run it around a few times, and then use the normal hammer. It works for me every time.

I think I read a post from coolerman, that said if it does not spin, to unbolt the four bolts on each cylinder on the back, which basically will make all the inners come loose.

Get a brake puller from a parts shop. Mike

And attach it to what?

Have you ever worked on the early brake drums?

Without destroying the brake backing plate, how do you get the jaws of a puller behind the brake drum?

:wrench:

Back to the bigger hammer.

try wedging a flat head screw driver in the hole on the drum and get it to wedge things a bit. Start wiggling from top and sides, should start to get loose after a while of that and a BFH.
