First foray into 80-series land - first time buyer (of any used car!) - help welcome

Not to keep you all guessing, but the winning strategy turned out to be to get a box truck froand drive the doggie and stuff across the country while keeping an eye out for an LC west of Denver. Just trying to combine way too many things at once - even with a trailer + light load it wouldn't be the expedition desert adventure I am imagining in my mind anyway, so will just have to settle for a drive with scenic stops.

On the truck, I went and saw the thing today; front axle was leaking something out of what I assume to be the steering bolt (is there such a thing? - that little knuckle that steers the wheels?). The rust was definitely there but was just black and flaky so I assume it was either painted over or treated. So that was an easy pass.

Overall, really appreciate everyone's comments, learned A TON about evaluating a purchase . Will definitely be getting a rig once I get out there, and any money left over from building up the plane will go to building up the truck.

I'll be based out of an airport called Santa Paula (I have a hangar with an apartment over it at the airfield) so if you're ever in Ventura county (that's just north of LA / south of Santa Barbara), hit me up.

Also, just FYI for everyone on this forum - I bought my plane for $22k and got my license for $5k 7 years ago. My license took me about 4 months total. I built up my plane with a ton of mods to get it into backcountry missions so I put in about 5k into it on top of the 22 and this is what it looks like now below. I still have a lot I want to do to it, but it's at a point where I can basically land on any open stretch of grass or gravel as long as the wind isn't too crazy.

I bring it up because it sounds a lot like what you guys are doing with trucks, so would love to start a dialogue to anyone interested on how to expand their garage to include a winged vehicle :)

Cheers and thank you all! Very glad to have found this community

Except that a 3rd gen 4runner is actually a truck and probably has 85% of the 80's offroad capability, factory diff locker, real 4x4, etc. More reliable, cheaper to run and way cheaper to fix. Only thing missing is the durability of a solid front axle, which if you're a 4 out of 10 wheeler, is totally not needed.

Exactly - I'm still keeping my eye on those 4wheelers.

Good call.

There are a lot of Land Cruiser guy in the LA area. @NLXTACY helped me procure my 93. He’s a good dude. Make friends with him because he’s always willing to help out.

If you are feeling feisty you can venture over to the Chat section and check out the airplane thread. There are a few pilots on here. They speak pilot.

Careful in chat. Aside from the airplane thread it is basically sodomy and defecation. True story.

4 Runners are cute! (Said in the most condescending way possible!) Nobody that wants an 80 will be happy with a 4Runner.

Thank you! Super helpful and I'll definitely be reaching out to him.

The airplane thread looks like most airline pilot forums haha - they're a certain bunch :)

I'm not a pilot by trade, just for fun on vacations.

Love seeing everyone so EXTRA helpful today...wonder what gives? :hmm:

I live 8 miles from Santa Paula Airport in Ventura.
x2 on finding the peach when you get out here.
I love going to the hangars when they have the open house thing, so many are full of cool toys (race cars, planes, collectibles, etc)
One guy has his whole upstairs full of old radios.

I’m sure the implication is that because she is female...

I don’t think this thread is any more or less helpful than any other first time buyer thread. We are a helpful bunch.

Made me think of Trent Palmer's stuff. He's making amazing videos about flying in the back-country. Good luck with the move and the 80 purchase.

I was gonna suggest Saline Valley, but looks like you already know the Chicken strip. Awesome!

Always a lot of 80's out there, be sure to introduce yourself!

I got stranded out there once after a huge storm and got wheeled out in a Land Rover. Definitely a super spot!

...and got wheeled out in a Land Rover, which promptly broke down. But a nice person in a LANDCRUISER helped us out.

Fixed it for you!
