Not to keep you all guessing, but the winning strategy turned out to be to get a box truck froand drive the doggie and stuff across the country while keeping an eye out for an LC west of Denver. Just trying to combine way too many things at once - even with a trailer + light load it wouldn't be the expedition desert adventure I am imagining in my mind anyway, so will just have to settle for a drive with scenic stops.
On the truck, I went and saw the thing today; front axle was leaking something out of what I assume to be the steering bolt (is there such a thing? - that little knuckle that steers the wheels?). The rust was definitely there but was just black and flaky so I assume it was either painted over or treated. So that was an easy pass.
Overall, really appreciate everyone's comments, learned A TON about evaluating a purchase . Will definitely be getting a rig once I get out there, and any money left over from building up the plane will go to building up the truck.
I'll be based out of an airport called Santa Paula (I have a hangar with an apartment over it at the airfield) so if you're ever in Ventura county (that's just north of LA / south of Santa Barbara), hit me up.
Also, just FYI for everyone on this forum - I bought my plane for $22k and got my license for $5k 7 years ago. My license took me about 4 months total. I built up my plane with a ton of mods to get it into backcountry missions so I put in about 5k into it on top of the 22 and this is what it looks like now below. I still have a lot I want to do to it, but it's at a point where I can basically land on any open stretch of grass or gravel as long as the wind isn't too crazy.
I bring it up because it sounds a lot like what you guys are doing with trucks, so would love to start a dialogue to anyone interested on how to expand their garage to include a winged vehicle
Cheers and thank you all! Very glad to have found this community
