And if it tells you anything he’s willing to trade for a 60/62 or 80...

No such thing as. “A little rust”...

a gigantic mystery, one would think they were giving away free 80's that had just been manufactured across the vast Pacific ocean, somewhat embarrassing to watch the plumage displays

Pro tip: If you need to go on a board to just ask one question, harness the power of mammaries by posting as a female. Bonus points if you go on shutterstock or Google and find a picture of some random broad to put in your avatar to futher solidify that yes, indeed you are a cute girl with a perplexing technical question. Be forewarned: you will get many pm's from the leg humpers looking to provide you with personal assistance.

I can't even begin to guess how many times I've done this over the years, all to great success.

Haha, never even thought of doing that, but I can see how it would help!

is there such thing as the right rig for the right price?

I am writting on the forum because I cant seem to find the right price point for the right rig. Can anyone give me some advice or guidance on what I can expect as in price range for a stock 97 lx450 with under 150k miles. FR Lockers, 1 owner, clean undercarriage, interior and body?

It varies wildly by local market. You have to know what you want and what you're willing to pay, then it's a waiting game. When you see it, you have to act fast to get it. Otherwise, you have to shell out more for the privilege of taking your time.

That's a pretty narrow band of requirements. I'd say you are in the $10-20k range if you are able to find a cruiser that meets all of those. If you are willing to flex on number of owners, mileage, lockers, etc the number of available cruisers will increase significantly.

When someone says they need lockers I always question it unless they are truly into off roading. Sure they are great for resale value but if you wont use them then why pay a premium.

Oh, and I say forget about lockers. People want a fortune for them and modern Harrop/Eaton eLockers are better and around $1200 per axle. Plus, a factory locked rig is more likely to have lived a hard life. Look for the soccer mom car and modify it yourself.

I really appreciate the input. The only reason I am being this picky, is because i sold my single cab 5.7 4x4 tundra. Beast of a truck and i just feel that i need my lx/lc with lockers to be able to justify selling my tundra. The other thing is that im planning a trip down to mazatlan and hopefully catching the ferry to la paz and drivig back up through baja so i will be going off road. I really want the right rig. That is clean, because i do want a solid foundation for my build. I found an lx with the things i was looking for but 19k for a 20 plus year old vehicle seems abit outrageous.
What do you guys think?

I may have a slightly different take on this, but I took about 200-300 in cash to each cruiser I checked out which meant i kept it in my pocket so I could meet people after work or during lunch and be the first to put a deposit on the right rig. I grabbed an LX that was used by an elderly lady who didn't know what that switch was for. Regardless of miles I knew that at 20something it was going to need belts, hoses and a few other things. Yours will too. You probably know how to spot a rig that has had a hard life so generalizations based on features shouldn't be required. Personally for 19k it would have to be rebuilt engine or swap, new leather, overland ready and not a dent. for 20k I would buy 3 rigs and all of them would be in decent shape.

my LX has 253k on it and i paid less than 8k for it. It could do that trip you are referencing and I will take 18k for it if you like :)

I keep a search on some auto websites just to see what is out there for sale.
There aren't many 80's if any with the interior upgraded and most are priced from $8k to 30k. depending on what the owner is smoking.:hillbilly:

Thanks clx16 what I got from that is that i shouldnt do it and it makes sense. to get the lx to where i would want it i would be 30k plus. Bumpers and sliders, ome 4”, 35s w/beadlocks, roof rack, and winch. So the next question is can i possibly find a clean lc/lx with lockers, 150k miles or so, for under 13k?

I think so. Be ready to travel, set alerts in craigslist, have a deposit ready, and be willing to get something much cheaper that has a good foundation. I am picky so I wanted something that had very little added on. I don't want to pay extra for things that I was going to remove and replace anyway. For any vehicle, first to make an offer and drop a deposit tells the seller they can sell quick and get at least something from it. they never know how much they are going to get from a buyer, as the market changes fast. You take the guessing out if they accept your offer. The guy who showed up after me tried to get the buyer to return my deposit as he was going to pay an extra 2k. He should have shown up before me if he wanted it so bad.

I recently saw on craigslist someone selling a rolled LC and the engine was rebuilt 70k previously, they wanted 2k. Had i had the space, I would have grabbed it and done an engine swap. it had lockers and those would have been sold to help cover the purchase price etc. Being creative and wiling to turn a wrench will save you a lot.

@clx16 yeah i guess im gonna have to wait it out for mi 80 series. I just hope i find the right one soon. Thanks again on the input and advice!

$19k for a 20+ year old rig is outrageous. If it were a full restoration like you see with classic muscle cars, that would be another thing. But just because it's not *too* trashed doesn't make the old hunting rig into a diamond.

UPDATE:
Moved to California in a U-Haul, fixed up the plane, bought an LX450.
I will be posting a separate thread as I start the build with all my questions and details but for now, the quick and dirty (good, bad and the ugly):

Yr: 1997
Mi: 204K
Single Owner, Socal based, never seen dirt
No lockers
Interior condition: cracked front seats, cracked leather dash, steering wheel in a bad way
Rust on body / undercarriage: none
Problems I saw when I picked it up: Rust in the radiator, blown valve cover gasket - spewing oil everywhere, warped brakes, one of the electric door locks don't work in the back
Purchase Price: $4,000

Currently in the process of baselining. I took it to Ken's in Thousand Oaks (thank you Paul!) who did a full inspection and did the following:
New OEM radiator
Flushed system and replaced coolant with Toyota Red
All new hoses on heater + coolant sys. (including PHH)
New belts on fans
New waterpump
New Heater valve, thermometer
New Valve cover gasket
New rotors
Total work so far: $3,200

Front axle seals okay, front bearings were loose but tightened, Ken's guys said nothing else wrong with front axle

Looking for advice what to do next (besides the all fluid flush. Can I flush fluids myself by the way?).

Welcome aboard as an owner!

And yes you absolutely can flush fluid by yourself with just a few hand tools and some questions. Get your other thread started and we can help out!
