First off I am a NEWBIE!!!! So bring on the:flipoff2: ...

OK... I finally did it. I got my first 40 last week. Its basically a barn find from up in the GA mtns. A 1977 with 62K miles. Original everything... almost. Clutch, and timing belt replaced some time back. New front bumper and newer tires.

Thanks for any advice!!! and Recommendations!!!

:flipoff2: WELCOME!!!!!
So those disc brakes dont look original to me....?

Nice find!!!!
I have major 40 envy!

Yeah it did have some break work done in the past... but the 77 came with front disk breaks from what I understand. So I think they are mostly original.

Tune up and Engine Detailed

So I have been learning quite a bit over the past few months, with some major help from "Lingo" and ACC here in Atlanta.

I got this FJ40 back in Aug 2010 and first rebuild the front knuckles. It was a great way to jump right in and gave me the confidence to take on the rest of my fixes. After the knuckles, I wanted to fix the noisy exhaust manifold leak and awesome whistling vacuum leak. Next thing I know, my entire engine is apart and I am at ACC to get everything blasted and powder coated.

Then all new gaskets, belts, hoses etc -- the list got longer and longer. ACC ordered them all for me at great prices and I owe them big time for all the help along the way. They got my manifold machined too. Putting it back together took longer than I wanted and it sat in the backyard longer than I would have liked. As expected I guess on these projects. Anyway, its back together, looks and sounds great.

Here is a list of new TOYOTA parts:

  1. Manifold Gasket
  2. Timing Cover Gasket
  3. Valve Cover Gasket
  4. Side Cover Gasket
  5. Hoses, and Belts
  6. Hose clamps
  7. Vacuum lines
  8. Plugs, Wires, and Rotor
  9. Diehard battery
  10. Radiator flushed and checked
  11. All fluids (diffs, transmission, transfer case...)

I think that's it... anyway it was a great way to learn about a 2F. Thanks again for all the help Lingo!

Now to drive this thing!:steer:

Smog Pump Rebuild

Smog Pump Rebuild. So after getting this thing running again, the smog pump started howling. So we pulled the belt and ran it for a while. I decided to keep the pump running and ordered new bearings from the links on this thread.

The parts ran less than $30. I borrowed a puller from Autozone (FREE) and got some synthetic high temp GreenGrease (Green Grease....The Best Grease Money Can Buy!....Just ask anyone who has used it!.....). There is some debate on what is the best grease to use, I will let you know how long the rebuild holds up. Also this thread by Trollhole with pictures was great on the rebuild.

Pump sounds much happier and is working well. Next on the list is a carb rebuild, not right away but at some point in the near future. The carb has never been rebuilt from my knowledge and is hesitating in certain spots under a load. What is the best way to get a carb rebuild done? I know most people have this done by an expert. Any opinions?

Damn that engine bay looks good. I might need to do this to mine.

Curious why you are keeping the smog system hooked up? I got mine a few months back from the original owner and it looks to me like they pulled the belt off about 30 years ago. I've been tempted to hook it back up...but only if I will save in fuel. I'd imagine it is taking horsepower.

When I got mine it had all emissions working including the pump. I agree that it probably takes some horsepower to run the emissions. I just want to keep the engine original and all in working order. Good luck with putting yours back together.

X-mas Break Work on FJ40

Not much time to work on the 40 while in med school. But got a few things done over the X-mas break.

- Replaced the broken down weather stripping on the back doors. That rattling has finally stopped!
- Replaced the old leaky Pitman arm seal. Hopefully that slow leak is now gone!
- Waxed again...

Thinking I will redo the front seats with $OR charcoal covers with the high density foam. Anyone ever use those? Recommended? I have heard they are great and worth the money if you want good original looking and feeling seats. Thoughts?

Looks like you're on a good path with your FJ40 - wish my '77 looked as pretty! I'll be able to use yours for reference, though, when I try piecing some things back together that are somewhat questionable! Curious, what is your frame number?

I hope your not driving that around here in the Iowa winters. The salt they layer on the roads will eat that up and that's to nice of a rig.

Nope already garaged for the winter. Doing all that I can to keep the rust at bay.

Rust Proofing (Rust Bullet) and Undercoating

Decided to go with Automotive Rust Bullet under the wheel wells in the front and back to prevent any further rust. Removed mostly all the 35 year old "not so rubbery" undercoating and put down 2 thick coats of Rust Bullet, then primed, 3M rubberized undercoat from Autozone, then primed again and sprayed with 416 Dune Beige from local paint store. Not a perfect match but pretty darn close. Think the 35 years of fading made it a bit different.

More Pics of Rust Proofing and Undercoating.

Going to do the back sil and under side of the floor boards. The rust is only surface rust and not bad at all but am just OCD on trying to preserve it longer.
