Thanks for chiming in Onur.... so it there any benefit to using one over the other? Wonder why one was discontinued?

Gasket kits were discontinued because no one bought them and Toyota told their supplier to not manufacture them anymore.

I don't think there is more or less benefit of using one or the other. Personally, I would use the one that is correct for you year engine. Mine is a transition month so I could have used either.

@beno Nice socks!! i know the guy who invented Smart Wool. he later sold out to Timberland the shoe company, which significantly reduced the wool quality and overall longevity of the socks and products. he was pissed and bored, so he started a new company: Point6 Point6 Merino Wool Performance Socks For Outdoor, Skiing & Active Life

i have some older original smartwools that are 14 years + old and are still holding up. the newer stuff seems to fall apart after 2 or 3 seasons.

Greg- sorry for the thread jack. hoping your head doesnt need too much work!

@Miloslavich no worries dude... I knew the SmartWool was based out of the boat but didn't realize it had been sold off to Timberland. I still think the make great socks but the quality has definitely changed in recent years. Will def have to check out Point6, seems like a good alternative and not overly pricey.

@beno - yeah my truck is a 10/85 to I guess it would be considered the Later Model engine but since that gasket is not available with a kit (and the price different is stupid cheap as I was going to grab some of those items included anyways) I will just stick with the available kit. Really hoping for some good news from the machine shop today but will call you ASAP on the valve(s) if I need replacements.

Woohoo!!!! Just got the call from the shop and everything is done.... the one valve was still within spec so all is good. Headed up after work to grab everything and hope to have it back together this weekend!!

Total cost is $400 for them to deck, grind, clean, flux and to have another shop deck the manifold.

Nope they said everything checked out fine, not sure what was going on with the gas getting into the coolant.
Other than your theory how else could the gases have gotten into the coolant? Stuck valve or improperly sealing valve? He did say that most of my valves were starting to cup and all needed to be reworked.

Also wondering if it could have been from the non-so tight headbolts? All headbolts did not take much to break loose except for the back two which my buddy couldn't bust with his old MAC impact at over 100psi and turned all the way up. He said that one was so tight that he watched the entire engine torque as I popped it loose.

Some reason my earlier post vaporized. It's happened before.

Anyway.... DEFINITELY if the head bolts were loose the head would not seal tight to the block.

Compared to the two rear, no they were not tight... I would call them somewhere in the 80ft/lbs torque area, where as the two hard ones were DEFINITELY much higher, probably 95+lbs.

Yes, but even the two bolts that required a 2 ft extension on the wrench to break them free, may no longer have been clamping the head down to spec.

It may not have been that they were clamping the head so tight, as they were probably more likely just seized in the block threads.

Ah ok that definitely makes sense.

So carb is now completely disassembled and bottom half of the bowl is in the carb dip.. While doing this I found out that my secondary must not have been working properly for some time as the secondary diaphragm is shot. So got to put in an order with Kurt (@cruiseroutfit) first thing tomorrow morning in hopes he can get it to me ASAP.

I've got an extra Napa secondary diaphragm I'm not going to use for a while. You're welcome to it for just cost of shipping.

Well didn't realize that they had them. May have to call and see how quick they can get it. $12 is a lot better than $30+ but wonder how well the aftermarket ones hold up.

I'll stick it in the mail today if you want. It took a few days just to get NAPA to ship. Just a back up...

Gotta love that NAPA is open at 7am (I am in the office by 6am at latest), just called and ordered two, they will be ready for me to pick up tomorrow morning around 10am. Love my local NAPA guys.

@HemiAlex thanks for the offer dude but NAPA is quick about it so I ordered two (just incase).

Heck even if it's not OEM quality its better than a torn one.

Very true.... when I took it apart last night it was actually so brittle and old that half was stuck to the upper plate and the diaphragm actually cracked while I was trying to remove it.

Hey Greg
Where did you get carb solvent to dip carb in?

@89fjlandcruiser I think I got it at O'Reilly, maybe NAPA. Was about $30 for the gallon but so far all the carb parts have fit in it just fine, take a bit of tetris-ing to get them in there but has worked great.
